Who do you feel each will select as their running mates.

Also, is there a list of candidates that has been tossed around for each?

According to Political Science 101, running mates are supposed to contrast the the main candidate. And if the current political parties followed that advice (by selecting perhaps a female or minority candidate), they'd greatly boost their chances of winning too.

But, in the last several elections, it's pretty much been old white (usually Southern) guys being paired up with other old white guys with similar political philosophies (Bush-Quayle, Reagan-Bush, Clinton-Gore, Dole-Kemp, the list goes on...) Polls showed that had Dole run with Colin Powell, he would have probably won against Bill Clinton, but he made an aweful choice for his running mate.

I wouldn't expect anything different this year. The current Presidential election sucks, neither man seems like the American public's first choice for President. They've only gotten there because they're "insiders" (John McCain was clearly more popular than Bush with the American public, but not so within the top Republican circles). I'd expect their running mates to be insiders of some sort too. When the final announcements are made, they're running mates will probably be guys you've never heard of.

I wish that Colin Powel had run for president. I really like that guy. I've always been of the Democratic persuasion, but he was a guy that I could understand.

Too bad he won't run with Bush :(

Doesn't matter who Gore selects. Regardless of who gets the nod, he will look like crap by comparison.

<< Bush's main problem is not to pick a running mate that will over shadow him >>

No, Red, as I said, that is Gore's problem. Any running mate that has the charisma and stature to help the ticket will leave the average democrat shaking their head and muttering, "the wrong guy is at the top of the ticket."

I have a problem with political geeks who claim they invented the internet.

And who claim they grew up on a farm, when they were actually raised in a fancy DC hotel.

Actually Bore and Gush would have been fair running mates for McCain and Bradley. Seems that in the US today, those that live their principles and ideals don't want the top job, or are enough of a political insider to get it.

And, who tell sob stories about the impact of the tobacco industry while at one event, and at the next telling the farmer audience about the joys of working in the tobacco fields.

I have a problem with a candidate that can't hold his iced tea.
Imagine this-
AIDE:"President Gore, it's President Putin on the hot line - it seems that a rogue Russian military unit is threatening to launch a nuclear warhead."
GORE:"I gotta pee."

I'd just like to remind everyone about Tipper and her fight to censor music according to her standards about 12 years ago. Boy, that whole fiasco was a joke.

just opening old wounds :)

Russ is on a tear!:D

The fiasco of the Gore campaign continues. He tried to go to Texas to point out hoe GW had failed as a Governor and made a complete fool out of himself!

This election even the Labor Unions either endorse Ralph Nader or polls show about half will vote GW.

As for a running mate for Gore? It will be very hard to find someone even more incompetent than Gore!:)

I don't care who Gore selects, I won't vote for him.

My prediction for Bush is PA Governor Tom Ridge. He's well known inside the party, but he doesn't have enough national exposure to overshadow the main candidate. He's more of a moderate, which will appeal to the middle of the road voters. He is Catholic, which won't likely alienate other Christians, but will attract the Catholic vote (usually split 50/50). Pennsylvania is currently the largest state that is up for grabs, and Ridge is fairly popular here, pretty much guaranteeing Bush the state. He also actually fought in Vietnam, and was wounded.

His only real liability to Bush is his pro-choice stance. He would not attract any pro-choice votes; they're still more likely to vote for Gore due to Ridge's support for PA's tough abortion restrictions. He might draw criticism from the Catholic church, as he has many times in the past, alienating some voters.

My only problem with it is that I don't like him, and don't plan on voting for him again. I really don't want to see him on a national ticket.

Ahh, for once my Political Science major becomes useful on these forums...

Conventional wisdom has it that Gore might pick Evan Bayh of Indiana for his VP. The newest thinking in the Bush campaign is Dick Cheney (former Sec Def/Congressman), according to the New York Times. A lot of people thought/think Tom Ridge of Pennsylivania is a possbile pick, but he is Pro-Choice, so anathema to a lot of Republicans.

Whoever it is, it's a more difficult choice because the Vice-Presidency has grown more important under Gore's tutelage. Picking a woman or minority (like Mondale did in 84 is seen as a sign of weakness, b/c you, the main candidate, look like yoou cannot rally votes on your own) is dangerous, because the VP candidate should NEVER overshadow the Presidential candidate.

That is what I'm talking about! There are many Democrats who are honest [well as politicians go anyhow]. Gore is in a dream world.
