Bush goes private sector for Treasury Secretary

XMan

Lifer
Paul O'Neill, of Alcoa . . .

All in all, a good move. Alcoa has been a well run and managed company. I've been saying for a long time that we need to get away from using Washington retreads and get some new blood into the running of the country . . .

Uh oh, he's an old white guy, though. Guess the Dems will have a bitch about this, too. 😉

I wonder how many accounting irregularities the new Treasury Secretary will find? The Clinton regime will be remembered unfondly as the regime that lost track of billions of taxpayer dollars (Dept. of Ed, Dept. of Ag., etc.). I still remember the head of the Dept. of Ed, after it was discovered he couldn't account for like $700 million, asking for an additional $100 million to improve their ability to perform accurate bookkeeping. Utterly disgusting.

Not as much of an outsider as you might think

O'Neill said he has known and worked with Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan since 1969, when he was beginning the administration service that led to his tour as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget. USA Today

I thought he might have gone for former Chrysler CEO Lee Iacocaine. 😛

Freeze frame (The J. Geils band)

Having worked for one of Alcoa's division for the past 3 years, I can tell you, Paul O'Neill was probably the worst thing to come out of the company in quite some time. The recent moves to acquire Reynolds Aluminum were done by Alain Belda. Paul O'Neill was sent on a year vacation by Belda because he wasn't doing the company any good and there were tons of layoffs. O'Neill was basically in a coma while Alcoa had to go through major restructuring under Belda. If it weren't for Belda rescuing the company through recent acquisitions, Alcoa would have been in the can.
