Seriously though...if Saddam was running, and he was somehow voted in, you KNOW he'd be assassinated within days because everyone knows and agrees about his danger. With Bush, it's all veiled in secrecy and double-talk and playing to our fears. That's far more dangerous than an overt dictator. And I don't blame Bush the man 100%, I blame Bush the idea and the administration.

The division over the various issues (pretty much boiling down to PNAC and the neo-con's against everyone else) has rendered this country weak and vulnerable to failure. The only hope of reconstruction is to get the agenda builders outta there and focus purely on the issues. When we once again DESERVE to be the idol and leaders of the free world THEN we can discuss a candidate and policy to put us there. Right now, we're nothing more than a spoiled schoolyard bully who thinks our own feces doesn't stink.

Actually it may interest people that a group of friends and co-workers and I sat and had a serious discussion about this subject at the end of november. We were all confused by national polls that placed his popularity at 50-60% when not one of us knew more than 2 or 3 people who liked the guy. So we formed our own poll. We held it on all our websites, groups and boards (about 200 total), we quizzed all our friends and co-workers, and we tried to remember to ask everyone we met throughout the day. We did this from Dec 14 until Dec 24. The final results showed about a 22% backing for Bush, with nearly 80% of those coming from known fundie/zealots or people with income well over $100k a year. This was with over 9000 responses. And as we thought, none of us personally knew more than a few people that backed him.

Is it scientific? No. Does it relate to all of America? No, we're mostly in the pacific NW. However, we did poll online and so had some responders from all across the country. Furthermore we polled at banks and major corporations, we polled rich AND poor, students and workers, miltary and civilian, etc. I surely trust those results more than these mysterious 60% polls that we have no idea who was polled or exactly what was asked. I still think that other areas are more behind Bush than we are...the NW is almost purely liberal and split between greens, libertarians, and democrats. But it did give me hope that even though the official polls show great support, and even though he has the best PR department since Adolf, and even though there isn't a single worthy force of opposition...there's still a very very small chance that enough people hate him to keep him out of office again. I'm still fairly certain that if every independent party would agree not to run this year, and the dem's can finally pick the best two options for nod, that there would be enough support by far to keep him out...unfortunately people are too focused on their own needs and goals to band together for a common cause of goodness.
