Nicely said.
Thanks!

....seeing as he finally agreed with me regarding "case of the double standards in society re:race"
Double standards exist...but this isn't one of them. Comparing blacks to monkeys is highly offensive and, you'll find, this is for very valid reasons assuming you care to do a little reading. Dude...your position is indefensible and you need to rethink this.
For once I'm going to weigh in on the other side. It's Obama's ears, not his race. With GWB, it's his face, not his race.
"Comparing blacks to monkeys'' would be wrong. A common assumption is that by comparing Obama to Curious George you are making a statement that blacks look like monkeys. Nonsense. The connection is that if you joke about Obama's appearance you are a racist. That's a threat. No one wants to be labeled a racist. Well I think it's about time that people and society in general grow up and stop looking under their beds for Communists, Terrorists, Racists, the Religious, Atheists- whatever. We're a screwed up paranoid society. It's just the flavor of the craziness which varies.
The comparison being based on the size of Obama's ears is your personal perception. Others obviously perceive this differently. I think it's just plain common sense to exhibit a little sensitivity out of respect for others who don't quite see things the way you do and view this comparison as extremely offensive.
That's fine. You are entitled to your opinion. What I dislike is not differing opinions, but the willingness for one side to bludgeon the other when it feels slighted. This is independent of the issue at hand. If given a choice between freedom of speech (which includes your right to disagree with a given topic) and worrying about offending someone, I'll take the former, regardless of the issue.
There are serious problems facing this country. I think that part of the problem with race in America is that people (no matter how ignorant) are afraid to do so without being labeled this or that.
I'll lead off and say that I think a large part of the race issue is the black community at large. My wife teaches college, and there is a sense of entitlement based on race from some students. Some actually expect to be given preferential treatment and grades based on their being black. Is this universal? No, because there isn't anything inherently inferior about being black, BUT there is something inherently racist when any people feel entitled to that which others do not have based on the color of their skin. This is not an isolated case BTW. There are other issues, like the acceptance of violence, single motherhood, a whole host of problems endemic in the culture (and I work in black neighborhoods so I see a lot of this first hand).
At some point someone need to say "Hey, I'm sorry for all the crap that's happened and I think you need a real chance, but you are ultimately responsible for yourself, no one else. Not government, not whites, not your fellow blacks. As a human you are responsible."
I saw someone say something to this effect at a college once, and they were booed off the stage as being racist. The lesson was clear. Thou shalt not be critical.
Until people feel free to discuss the issues without fear of retaliation, there will be no progress.
With crime and poverty running rampant, we worry because someone might be making a racial statement with Obama? Screwed up priorities.
