Here is the link.

I can't see how - even if you 100% agree with their philosophies and actions - after having had 2 wars in as many years they can be nominated for the "peace" prize. Alfred Nobel created the prize as a way to ease his conscience given the nasty effects of the nitroglycerine he helped to refine and use as an explosive. I don't see how he would agree to this!

Cheers,

Andy

It's not like hes actually going to win it... but it does show europeans are trying to warm up to the US more.
Which is a GOOD thing.

I dont agree with Bush's politics or his ways in dealing with other countries, but it feels good freeing the people of Iraq from Saddam.

I wouldn't jump for joy. Arafat won one of those too. I think I got one in a crackerjack box once...If all goes well Bush will deserve one, but we won't know if all goes well for a long long time.

I don't think I would have included them in my top ten choices but my opinion counts for naught anyway. I don't even know what parameters are used when deciding on a Nobel nomination.

Bush will win a Nobel Prize for Physics before he wins one for Peace. Maybe they'll make a new Prize for Voodoo Economics. :)

explain Arafat's Peace prize?

He shared it with Rabin or Peres? I would say it was two parties with diametrically opposed positions and legitimate issues that agreed (in principle) that continued fighting kills people and the prospect for peace. Unfortunately, forces on both sides were far less conciliatory. If the Committee could take back prizes I would definitely put Kissinger and Arafat at the head of the queue.

explain Arafat's Peace prize?

Well, firstly he only got 1/3. It was shared with Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin. It was awarded for "their efforts to create peace in the middle east". At the time I believe serious attempts were being made at discussion and forumlating peace startegies. Their joint prize was for attempting to bring peace to this very troubled region. It was - if you like - for trying to end a war.

It seems a contrast to what I oringally posted. Arafat may be a terrorist but he was trying to move forward with a peace plan at this time. I have no doubt that if the IRA managed to entriely decommission tomorrow and the fate of NI was ensured, that Gerry Adams/Martin McGuiness, Tony Blair and maybe Bill Clinton would also be up for the peace prize.

Cheers,

Andy

So if Polpot had signed a peace treaty, than he could get a Peace prize too?

Polpot was a dictator, no? who ruthlessly persectued his (through birth and by military coup if I remember) own people. Can you see any dictators on the nobel laureate list (I haven't looked)?

Well, in the Peace Prize's defence. Arafat, if he'd had succeeded, would have made a significant contribution to Peace in the Mid-East. Perhaps giving him and his Israeli counter-parts the prize was a bit hasty, but fate conspired against the process. So, it was almost deserved, but someone assUmed. :(

Hopefully, the Democrats will be up for the peace prize when they free us from Bush in '04.

Is that before or after the "killing fields" . . . truth be told if it wasn't for those imperialist Frenchies . . . Polpot would not have had a cause to fight for. And it's not like our wonderful US government (Presidents Ford and Carter) did anything about it. If not for the neighboring Reds in Vietnam the death toll in Cambodia would have been worse.

For the peanut gallery, most of Afghanistan is ruled by warlords . . . you know the same warlords that prompted populist support for the Taliban. Most of Iraq is ruled by whomever has the most guns and the will to use them. Unless you live in Kabul, improvement in Afghanistan is questionable. As for Iraq, the only people really happy live in Kuwait or Israel. Well, I'm sure the people perpetually being kicked in the arse by Saddam (Shia, Kurds) are quite happy . . . assuming they have water, food, electricity, and enough ammo to hold off the hordes.
