but everything still works. So what is it I am smelling, I kinda wonder.

My HD was dangling loose sitting on the base of the case and I moved it accidentally, and it touched my ethernet NIC in the PCi slot... saw a spark but my PC didn't die. I immediately shut it down, then in a few minutes I turned it back on, and everything still works far as I can tell. I thought my NIC was gone, but not even.

Lighting just struck close but everyone is alive... 🙂

You just smell what it hit and are very lucky... 😉

You smell ozone I think Never play inside the case with the power on!

What I dun get is still how ur HDD "touched" ur NIC. Cuz it's a retty far ways away the pci card slots and the bays. Unless u got one of those mid-tower cases :S

my HD is able to contact the NIC because I dont have the HD screwed in, it's sitting on the floor of the case. this is merely a tertiary PC mind you not my main rigs.

Top notch advice.....I had a friend....yeah a friend....thats the ticket....anyway, I...I mean HE once tightened the screws on the heatsink fan because it was making a really loud noise, while the system was on....goodbye processor, oh well..doh.

If it all appears okay then you should be fine but keep an eyeball on it for a few days....maybe run with side of case off just in case, maybe something got too hot which means it might smell for a few days....hows the cooling in the case?

chances are your hard drive just touched a capacitor on the nic and it discharged. You are lucky the hard drive is still working fine.

yeah, i kinda thought if my nic still works then it was a capacitor that had a hiccup... but that capacitor is gone, right?

nah, i wouldn't have minded if the HD went, it's not my main PC. I would have cared if it was my MB that got hosed cuz it's a Dual board with 1Gig of Memory.
