Burnt one or both of them up

For some odd reason the system powered itself on when I plugged the PSU in. Unfortunately the system had no heatsink installed. Odd thing is there is no burnt spots nore did I smell any odd odors. Whats the chances of it taking the mobo aswell? I know it doesn't post anymore nor does it beep with the CPU or memory out.

Is there any way to test them without having more parts? I don't have any extra socket A mobo's or CPU's.

hard to say, but i'd bet that the mobo is okay... if you didn't leave it on too long

I'd say it was on for 4-6 seconds. I paniced and tried using the on/off on the case first instead of flipping the switch on the PSU. Does no beeps normally mean the mobo is dead?

Even without a HSF you should have a good few seconds before it bursts into flames. The temperature does have to rise from the ambient to 80*C + and that's not instantaneous.

But you do know you're an idiot for working inside the case with the power cable plugged in.

Yeah I know even though I thought the PSU was switched off when I plugged the cord in. But thats no excuse. Besides me being a idiot part I know one of the 2 or both is dead. It posted fine before.

Ok I know someone with a socket a mobo and CPU that I am sure he will let me barrow. Question is if it was the mobo could it burn a good working CPU up if I try to test it on it? Or if I tried putting the CPU and it burnt up in a working mobo could it take the mobo out?

Or should I just make me a keychain out of the CPU and use the mobo for parts?
