Hey guys what would happen if the hotel claims that you burnt the hotel carpet with a cigarette and wants to charge you? Is there any recourse for that or any insurance that covers it (credit card, renter's insurance)? Thanks!

I don't believe so. It's a good distance (1 meter) from where I had a smoke and I've only been here for one day and I haven't been drunk yet. So I'm a little disturbed by the situation.

I tend to think a hotel wouldn't get into a confrontation with a guest unless they were convinced the guest had done something bad, and I mean really convinced. Which of course does not mean they're right. What color is the carpet? Would the burn be easy to miss or does it stand out like a sore thumb?

Lastly, is it a smoking room (do they still have those?) Because if it isn't you're paying.

I would ask them for proof beyond the word of the cleaning lady that the burn wasn't there before you took the room. If they refuse to provide it then tell the you'll see them in court. If they do provide anything remotely convincing then you'll probably have to pay up.

If you did it speak to someone of importance at the hotel and tell them 1k for a carpet repair is pretty expensive, especially since they frequently replace them anyways.
If you are confident you did not do it, check out, don't sign off on anything and dispute any extra charges on your credit card.

How much longer do you need to stay? I'd call and make sure your credit card company does not accept any charges from the hotel. Pay cash.

if you can afford to smoke, you can afford to fix the carpet.
This....but you really shouldn't be smoking indoors...that's how accidents happen.

It's Karma for all the lungs of bystanders you've ruined. It all evens out.

But seriously maybe you're a sleep smoker? I wouldn't pay it either way if I knew I didn't do it. Unfortunately they will probably screw your credit or something.

Thanks for the insight guys. I'll talk to the manager tomorrow and see where we stand. For all the smoke haters...I really don't smoke normally especially when I'm in the states but something about wearing a Ritz Carlton bathrobe and sipping cappuccinos 100+ floors up in the world's highest hotel listening to bang and olufsen speakers really brings out the smoker in me. Just saying..

It's pretty hard to spot. The manager inspected it earlier when I was out and when he came back to show me he had to get a flashlight and look for 2 minutes to find it again....

It just seems odd that a place like the Ritz would take the chance of offending a guest over something like that if they aren't 120% sure.

Did you get some type of discount on the room? Almost sounds to me like they purposely want to piss you off so you'll leave and they can rent it out for more money. Hotels don't normally make a stink over tiny ash marks on their carpets in a smoking room.
