burnt DVD did not work

I just burnt a video DVD using nero smart start, but it does not work in the dvd player or even the PC. Why? Is there something I need to ensure is checked when I burn a DVD? I'm sort of new to this, but I figured it was just as easy as burning a normal CD...

Also is it normal for it to take bloody hours to burn? Well not the burn part, but it says "transcoding" or something, that process takes forever. I burned a video DVD before and it works, so not sure why this one does not work. Also which one do I choose, NTSC or PAL? Maybe that's part of the problem.

The burner is a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552. I know this model is known to have problems, but unfortunatly that's my luck, and there's no Fing way I'm undoing my acrylic case again and buying a new burner, if it worked before there should be a way to make it work all the time, it's only like my 3rd time burning a dvd with it...

um, you should really learn most of this stuff before you attempt to burn a DVD. DVD's are much trickier to burn than CD's, and if you live in america, you should use NTSC, if you live in england, you should use PAL. You should use either DVD+R or DVD-R discs, and they should be rated for the max speed of your DVD burner. What are your computer specs? My 1500$ rig took about 3 hours to encode a whole movie.

So, if the DVD's are lower speed then my DVD burner I'm screwed? Since there's no way I'm dumping my whole spindle of DVDs just because they're 8X and my burner is 16X (I think, can't seem to find a way to check without having to insert a disc, which defeats the purpose since it's limited by the disc). Also when I get near the burn process I get a message saying the video has more PAL data then NTSC data so I just clicked yes to change it, so if I live in Canada it should be NTSC then? Chances are I burnt it PAL given I get that message.

As for the speed issue, is there a way to make my DVD burner think it's a specific speed? Since I'm sure at some point media will become faster, so I don't want to have to buy a new one every time they come out with different speed media, that's kind of silly.

Glad to know it's normal for it to take 3 hours though, I figured something was way wrong. My system is an AMD Athlon 64 3200+.

Burn an AVI (divX) (not copying the actual AVI file as data)

I just happened to have saved the burn log, would it help diagnose the issue if I posted it? It's pretty huge so that's why I'm asking first.

Transcoding takes a long time...maybe you should try to burn another one and see what happens. If it's a DVD your trying to make a back up of or something there are better programs out there for that...😉

Yeah this time I'll burn to image first then burn the image... on my desktop there is a folder called VIDEO_TS which contains what looks like the files that are on a video DVD if you open it in explorer. (I set the temp folder to be my desktop) Is there a way I can reburn it using that? That way I don't have to encode again.

Oh ok yeah, that I knew, it goes with anything really. Tonight I'll burn to an image first then burn it to DVD tomorow and see what happends... hopefully it was just a fluke or something. But I did disabled the network link on that PC, closed all programs, etc so really not sure why it did not work.

This is weird. So I re encoded it, burnt it to an image this time so if it fails I don't have to re encode. So I go to burn the image, it keeps saying the DVD is a CD and that it won't fit on it. So I had other stuff to do so said screw it. Came back tried again just for fun, and it worked.
