Burnproof?

This may be a dumb question and I apologize if there has been another post regarding this topic (I DID use the search function), but here goes:

Is Burnproof or some other type of buffer underrun protection necessary for CD-RW drives these days? It?s been well over a year since the last time I bought a CD burner and at that point, Burnproof was considered almost a necessity. Now I need a USB external drive for a laptop and none of the ones I?ve seen mention buffer underrun protection. Is it not necessary anymore? Is there buffer underrun protection on all drives now so that they don?t have to mention it? What gives?

Most all current drives use it. (or Justlink or whatever the manufacturer decides to call it) Many external USB 1.1 drives don't have it as they are using older drives (4X, 6X) but any USB 2.0 or Firewire ones should.

Should I make the assumption that a 40x drive has buffer underrun protection, even if it doesn't say anything about it? The TDK 40x12x48x USB 2.0 drive (link to drive @ Outpost.com) looks like it might be my best bet, but it doesn't say anything on Outpost.com's website or on TDK's website about buffer underrun protection....

Actually, if you look hard enough, you'll find an online live chat service they have. I asked one of the guys there and they assured me that they did have underrun technology on that drive. Also, there is a .pdf on their site about USB 2.0 and says that you should always have the underrun technology enabled to avoid problems. However, this wasn't specific to the device, so this might not technically be correct.

The .pdf is here.

There is also a review of the internal drive on CDR-Info's site here.

I also found this review from ReviewMakers.com that lists BURN-proof as one of the technologies included. Here it is.

It depends on how much stuff you are doing at once (to be concerned about buffer underruns). If you do a bunch of things at the same time you burn, then yes, get it (or don't avoid buying it 🙂 ). If not, then it doesn't matter.

I seem to do just enough while I'm burning that I can see the buffer drop pretty low (or empty), but its not all that common. And with these super-fast burners, I don't really see the problem in waiting a few minutes anyways if I had to 🙂

Thanks for the info! I just searched for the drive elsewhere on the internet and found it on Amazon.com. They had a picture of the box I was able to zoom in on which does say it has buffer underrun protection. I don?t know why TDK?s site and Outpost.com?s site don?t list it as having buffer underrun protection, but it apparently does.

Before I order this drive, does anyone know of a better deal than this TDK 40x12x48x drive for $110 after rebate? This is a Christmas present, so I?d rather stick with a brand name that the recipient will recognize (TDK, Plextor, Sony, HP, etc.). The only other one I?ve found that?s close is an Iomega 40x12x48x at Circuit City for $100 after rebate. I think they look kind of cheap though, and the TDK is only $10 more and is actually $10 less before the rebate. If anybody knows of another drive that?s comparable, please let me know (I?ve already checked pricescan.com, pricewatch.com, pricegrabber.com, etc.)

Thanks again!
