Frys prices valid from 2/23 to 2/27

CD-RW Drive 12x10x32x for 159 after 30 MIR
*It features BurnProof technology* So this might be worth it.

Midiland 5 piece speakers
1 sub and 4 satellites speaker and 40 watts for $22.99. The 3 piece speaker previously sold for about 16.95 at outpost.com. The 5 piece might be a little better but decent for this price.

12x Dvd-Rom and 40x cd-rom decoder
$69 - $20 MIR = $49

Connect 6 is a windows proxy email server
$49.99-$49.99 MIR = $0

Home Office 2000
34.99-34.99 MIR = $0

The DVD ROM is a good deal. It's from EPO and tested to be a safe source for 8X burn on the fly, though I have mine at 12X all the time without any problem.

The DVDROM also comes with full version PowerDVD software, if anyone cares.

I bought the EPO 12X DVD drive and I could only get it to be seen at boot up a couple of times. I checked DAE on it, as I would replace my Cd rom drive with it but its DAE rate was only 5X. I checked the read me file in the floppy disk for supported chipsets and my KT133 (Abit KT7 raid) wasn't on there, so that is most likely the reason why the drive wasn't consistently seen at boot up. When it did see it, the DVD played well. Took it back, though.

I was considering that 12x DVD-rom drive from Fry's. I noticed that it dropped $20 from last week to this week's $49 (after MIR). Is this a white/brown box unit? I'm not familiar with the brand EPO -- can someone direct me to a web site or rate it for me? The fact that esquared had problems with his and returned it is not a good sign...

Anyone recommend a similarly priced and reputable DVD with PowerDVD software?

Alrocky:
The EPO unit is a retail box. Here's their website link below. Ask
them what chipsets are compatible with the DVD player. I should have copied the chipset compatiblity info from the floppy disk before I returned the DVD drive but I didn't anticipate any questions like this. When I was buying the DVD drive, a customer was buying another because he liked the way it ran in his system so apparently it works with the proper recommended chipset. I do remember the requirements of at least a 350 Pentium II and and preferably a 550 or faster to run the software properly. If you can get it to work I am sure it's
a good deal. I have read in the forums that people are recommending the Pioneer or Toshiba 12X or 16X drive. This is what I probably will buy. Here's the link to EPO's website: Link

I bought EPO DVD Rom. It's my first DVD rom. It's very quite when playing DVD, somewhat noisy when playing music CD (?why).

It's region-free. A decent deal for $49 after rebate.

EDIT
I tried several music CDs, all quite except one. It seems like it's the problem with that CD.

If this DVD Rom is CloneCD compatible, it's a hot deal.

Pros:
* region-free
* quite
* 12x

Cons:
* Clone-CD compatible?
* DAE? (what's this?)
* not a brand name?

THAT DVD IS SORRY! I bought it for 40 bucks around Christmas just for kicks to see if it would do alright... It ran like crap, the picture was jerky and about every other minute or so it would pause and freeze for a second or two... i took it back same day, dont waste your money

jjs1969, they had it for $40 around Xmas? Is it 10x or 12x?

I ran "braveheart" with no problem at all. I tried both PowerDVD and WinDVD2000.

I couldn't tell any problem with picture and sound. It looks very good to me. Maybe you got a bad unit.

Hey SuperTool, do you go to the Fries on E. Arques in Sunnyvale? That's my favorite one, but it's usually pretty crowded.
