I have an abit KT7 Motherboard, and I had an 800Mhz Athlon in it. I decided to overclock it and I closed the L1 bridges. I used Arctic Silver 2 for thermal paste and isopropyl alcohol to take away the old thermal tape. When I put the processor back in, it acted like there was no processor in the socket. I was very confused for a while, but then thought that maybe the clock settings in the softmenu were set for ridiculously high overclocking (I'm not sure, but it's a possiblility), so when I put the processor back into the socket with the L1 bridges open, it burned up right away. Does this sound like a possibility? Has this happened to anyone before?
 
sounds like you handled your processor to much. might have caused some electrostatic discharge in some of the pins while you were cleaning it.
 
Sorry to hear that. I've never had a problem with unlocking chips and getting them started and overclocked. Was you board set at 133fsb? Maybe the fsb was set too high and the CPU couldn't take that large of an increase on the first step. Just a thought.
