Burnout Paradise to be full downloadable game on PSN

Link - I'd probably prefer a disk for a game like this but good news for people who don't mind at all. Bad news for Gamestop as the industry continues to shift more and more to downloadable games.

Massive news this week, here on the Burnout team!

Today we?re proud to announce another PlayStation exclusive for Burnout Paradise. This fall, we?ll be making the entire game available for download via the US PLAYSTATION Store. You?ll finally be able to join us in Paradise City without leaving the comfort of your home, and you won?t have to get up to put the disk in!

A big thanks to the folks at Sony for making the future of video games a reality now. We?ll announce a release date soon, but in the meantime, it?ll look something like this:

The download will be $29.99, but it?s not the disk version of the game we originally released back in January. This is an all-singing, all-dancing version complete with all the free packs so far. Here are some of the highlights. All new game modes, like Online Marked Man and Online Road Rage. Awesome new vehicles, including the Hunter Olympus and Nakamura Rai-jin Turbo. 70 all-new challenges featuring against-the-clock gameplay and leaderboards plus the in-game calendar and news page. Check the details on our website.

And this is just the start. We?re all about supporting Burnout players through online this year.

We want to change the way you think about DLC. We?re bringing you much more than just a couple of cars or a new track ? this is the complete transformation of Burnout. That means you?ll see new game modes, new vehicles including motorcycles, day / night gameplay, weather, a huge new island play area, stacks of new challenges and maybe even aircraft!

The next pack from us will be the free Bikes Pack that we outlined in our last post. We promised a little more detail on what to expect. So here it is.

The two bikes available from Day 1 will be the FV1100 street bike and the Nakamura Firehawk V4 racing bike. With bikes, we?re introducing characters for the first time in a Burnout game. Both bikes feature designs for male and female riders. Just make your choice in the Junkyard.

The Nakamura FV1100 is a no nonsense street bike. The sweet 1100CC engine delivers high performance with easy handling making it the most versatile bike in Paradise. The exposed engine doesn?t leave much room for stylish paintwork, but when the engine looks this good, who needs bodywork?

The Nakamura Firehawk V4 is thoroughbred racing bike. It arrives on the streets of Paradise straight from the race track! The Kanji characters on the guys? version mean ?fire?, but we also have a version for our female rider, featuring an all-new Burnout cartoon character.

We?ve got more on bikes from their Japanese creator ? Yuta Nakamura ? in our next video podcast, and of course our website ? www.criteriongames.com

Burnout Paradise. Always changing.

I don't buy used games, so it's $29.99 for a new game (disc) or $29.99 for a download. I still think I'd take the physical disc because I can go to a friends place and play it there. If I download it on my PS3, I can't do that.

But this gets me thinking, I may need to upgrade my 60GB drive to a 320GB drive soon. I'd hate to have my drive filled up and THEN upgrade.

Bringing your PS3 over or re-downloading the game (I assume the download is linked to the PSN account) is not the same as just taking a disc and rolling with it.

I have always preferred hard copies, it's just more substantial, something to put on a shelf, it has more value than just a bunch of bytes in my opinion but I think this is great for those who are indeed fans of digital distribution.

You're allowed to share PSN games on up to 5 systems as long as you have the PSN account set up on the other systems (it doesn't have to be the one playing the game).

Warhawk used to have the restriction that a game can only be used on one system within a 24-hour period, but they recently lifted that restriction.

That's pretty nice but I supposed you still have to re-download the game, if your friend doesn't have a good internet connection I assume the 10gb or whatever it is download won't be pretty.

i really think they need to drop the price of these downloadable games to make them worth while.

i don't know 1 person who would rather have a digital copy of something over the physical disc if they are going to be paying for it.

i'm pretty sure burnout will have the same restriction as warhawk did, and i'm sure socom will as well.

also i heard the 24 hour restriction was lifted, however when i checked a few weeks ago, in the description for warhawk, it still had that restriction listed.

Never going to happen.

People have no problem with Steam and it has been a success

PC gamers and console gamers are... different. Renting PC games is unheard of, and reselling them is much more rare because of serial number issues. PCs are an open system; you can rebuild your system, replace AMD with Intel or vice versa, and Steam will still work. We have 5 year generations, and there is no telling what will and won't work next generation. PC gamers seem much more put off by having to put a disc in the tray as well. 😕

Downloadable PC games and downloadable console games are not in the same ballpark. It'll be a long time before I pay the same price to buy a digital download that I'd pay to buy the physical media. Same with movies, although I WOULD pay for downloadable rentals.

I kind of like having the downloaded games because sometimes i'm too lazy to get off the couch and change discs. 😉
How about the ability to copy the game to your hard drive? Best of both worlds.

That method requires the disc to be in the system. Otherwise people would just rent everything and copy to the HDD.

I think the best situation would be to use DRM to lock the copy of the game to the console it's installed on. If it's uninstalled, then the lock is removed so you can sell it. I'd love to have an offically supported HD Loader type application on my PS3. Install an image once and forget putting the disc back in ever again. I've got a 320GB HDD in my PS3, so this would be a wonderful thing.

I however can see the abuse already. Rent from Blockbuster/Gamefly/etc when a game is released and install on HDD. They could get around this by having to reautheticate the disc ever 10 plays or so, but it would still be a very "extended" rental, and most folks can finish a game in 10 plays. You know, I'd be willing to autheticate the disc on every play if it meant nearly no load times while actually playing the game though. Bottom line for me I suppose is that I want a sellable copy of the game, with the benefits of HDD access times while I'm still playing the game. Yes, I want my cake and want to eat it too.

At least this publisher is offering extra content on top of what's already in the original game for the same price. Or is the extra content available free as a separate download with the original game?

Still not everyone likes it 😛

Steam is a pretty great app, you are pretty much forced to use it with games like The Orange Box, it updates automatically and it's pretty seamless.

But many people, myself included, still like to have a physical copy, game boxes are pretty cool and they have more sentimental value than just the digital download in Steam, I still have the old boxes for some of my old games (Civilization II, Warcraft, among others) and it gives you a great nostalgic feeling to look at the boxart and remember how good the game when you played it all those years ago. If all I had was the game installed on my PC, it wouldn't the same feeling.

GameStop can rest assured that many many people still prefer the good ol' retail box no matter how convenient or how well done systems like Steam are.

Oh no no, you are stepping in dangerous territory there, one of the great stuff about consoles is the plug and play setup and no fighting with DRM, that's one of the things PC gamers hate the most about new releases because all DRM does is annoy legitimate consumers.

As for your last question, I think the downloadable game and the retail game have the exact content, what the news story probably meant is that when you download Paradise you get all the content included right there but when you buy retail Paradise you have to download the content separately. The bikes and extra cars are, as far as I know, also available on the retail game through free DLC.

Steam needs to work on allowing games to be transferred to another steam account (selling it). Right now, they make it overly complicated to do so (+ it's 10$).

They need to enhance it so that users can easily sell the titles they don't like (for example, there's alot of stuff in the orange box that I don't play) to other steam users (I wouldn't mind paying a small fee for the service). Nevertheless - those greedy bastards probably won't allow it as it might take away a normal steam sale.

I think Microsoft needs to get something like that working properly with their Games for Windows initiative, standardizing copy protection would also be great. Didn't Gears of War GFW game require that you login to Live?

You quoted the wrong person buddy, purbeast0 said that, not me. I took the liberty of fixing that in my quote of your post 😛
