Yes, it could technically, and litteraly, burn your CPU...if you have really poor cooling, and have been using something like winnt kernal or linux, or some other program to initiate the hlt command, and have never used your comp under full load before.
That said, I bet you've put at least a 'lil strain on your CPU before, and if it didn't constantly hang at those times, you're
very unlikely to kill your chip....you might freeze your computer, but the chances of you burning the chip up, are next to nothing.
