Greetings,
I hav a 24/10/40 plextor CDRW drive. I was wondering about how long it should tkae for this drive to burn a full700 MB file @ 24x. SInce it seems that when I burn a 700 MB file it takes me approximately 4 min and 55 seconds. I thought that my speed should be much faster. I am currently using FUJI 24x media, coupled with the nero program. ANyone who has any ideas please respond. Or what speeds you folks tend to get. It cant be ram since I have 768MB of ram in here. And I also am using Windows XP Proff. with no programs running. THanks.

I might be wrong but I don't think it burns at 24x throughout the whole CD. It goes from 16x - 24x I believe.

I think you should get faster than roughly 5 minutes if you're just burning raw data onto the CD. My 8X Phillips burner can burn 680mb (most I've tried to fit on a 700mb cdr) of crap onto a CD in around 7 minutes. Or at least my clock implied it only took 7 minutes.

When you burn with Nero, at the top of the burning screen it gives you the size, in MB, and a number in minutes and seconds, divide that time by the speed of your burner and I find you get a good approximation.

4:55 for a full 700MB, 80 minute burn isn't bad.

My 24x Lite-On does it around 4:20-4:30.

check to make sure you have the dma checked on the cd setup.
I had the similar results and changed the setting and was able to burn in 3 minutes

damn sometimes it hits 5:20... when I go in device manager in WINXP, I go to DVD/CDROM drives. then in properties I have the general tab
properties tab, which just shows the volume
volume tab for the cd then the driver tab. I dont see the option for dma.

IN the IDE /ATA/atapa devices it says its using multi-word DMA mode 2..... for transfer mode I have if DMA is available... its really weird. :-/

I am getting somewhat upset though since some guy told me he gets 4:20 and I sometimes am a full minute above that....

I get 4:16 w/my liteon burner when burning a FULL 80 minute cd (a little over even)

Plextor assures quality though, so that could be it? Who knows. Plextor is too high priced for my blood...

how is your burner set up? and how are you burning these cd's? (data from the HD or copying a CD from the CD-ROM drive?)

the cds could be bad. it depends on the media. the plextor software starts at 12x i think and moves accordingly up to 24x if the media supports it correctly. i was burning on PNY 80min cdrs in 4:10 and they were 16x certified cdrs. so the media could be bad. good luck to ya. plextor doesn't give you crap. it's good. just gotta find it's sweet spot.

Start downloading drivers like mad, mobo, firmware, windows updates like the burner compatibility update, and turn off windows XP's cd burning thingy by going to properties in your CD burner and TURN OFF "enable cd recording on this drive." (The drive will still burn, just not with window's own software)
Hope this helps.

I bought the Fuji Film 24x cd-r's (made in Japan) also for my Plextor 24/10/40A (1.03 f/w). The time it takes for a full cd to burn is also around 4m50s (16x?). I know it's not my computer setup because I have burned a full cd using TDK media and the time was about 3m10s (24X?). So I would think the Fuji Film CD's are the problem here. Hopefully the next firmware from Plextor will allow the Fuji Film 24X CDs to actually burn at 24X.
