When burning a CD image, as with a .nrg file in Nero, when it says the image is like 690MB, is that just the size of the image, and the actual size after burning could be much less? ie. it might fit on a 654MB CDR?

Well, I haven't done much overburning, but it's possible in Nero if your burner supports it (most newer ones do I think).

I think a general rule of thumb when overburning is 5% of the capacity. Since 5% of 654mb puts you at 686mb, it may be possible to overburn the image file. I'd just go ahead with the burn and see if it works.

I recommend using high quality CD media when overburning.

But it seems I was thinking, the image size has no relation to the size the actual CD will be. ie. a CD with 300MB could still have a 650MB image?

CD Images usually will contain ecc information, so a 74 minute cd (650 meg data) will be around a 740 meg image, and a 80 minute cd (700 meg data) will be around 800 megs as an image.

audio/video/supervideo cds have less ecc data, so those cds will be 740/800 megs, when you load your image into nero take a look and see what the time is, as long as it is less than 74 or 80 minutes, you won't need to overburn

If the image is 75-80 minutes and you're trying to burn to a 74 minute cd, it MIGHT work, but you'd be best off getting some 80's (I don't think you can easily find 74 minute cds retail anymore.)

So if you're saying a CD Image of about 740MB might only be 650MB of data, so a 693MB CD Image file might only be 603MB of data?

Yeah, if it's a data cd then it'll be smaller than the image itself might lead you to believe.

For example, I have a cd image that's 517mb 52:00:59- there's around 50mb of data and then the rest is audio

Another cd image I have is 594mb 58:58:38 and has 517mb of data on it after burnt.

Just check the time of your image when you're ready to burn it (in nero go to file > burn image (select the image) > info) it should be around 69 minutes so it should fit on a standard 74 minute/650 meg disc with no problems.

Oh, when I said data, I was referring to the everything incl. audio. Looking in Nero, it won't fit. According to Nero: Total capacity for burning 78:49 693MB, Total capacity on disc 74:28 654MB.

Have you tried overburning yet?

Overburning might work, I've pushed 76 mins, but 78 is an awfully big overburn. It might work, but the data at the end could be garbage. If you don't mind making a coaster give it a shot - otherwise go pick up some 80 min cds.
