Well, not really, of course, but is anyone else scrounging through the spare parts bin, looking for some old GPU to fire up and crunch BOINC, or Fold proteins with, to provide some "intelligent heat" this winter?

Now, I know what you regular DC forum folks are thinking (if you are in the upper parts of the Northern Hemisphere), duh! of course we are!

But, this is actually a lure for the non-DC forum users, who might see that catchy title off to the right under "New Posts." So we may not be above luring folks with catchy titles, but at least we're open about it. ;)

Well newbies, if you didn't know, YES, you can literally help heat your home for the winter and produce useful scientific research in the process! Just browse this forum a bit for detailed info, or ask away right here, and any number of the regulars will be happy to give an answer to your inquiry.

But for starters, you have two major choices: Folding@Home; or BOINC. BOINC is more versatile, as it allows you to choose from any number or research topics, from medical research, astronomy, physics, math, climate change, SETI, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc. Folding@Home concentrates on medical research.

If your interest is in the slightest bit piqued, please know that TeAm AnandTech is currently battling Brony@Home, a my-little-pony team, in Folding@Home. Hey don't laugh, we thought they'd be easy to defeat, but it's been quite an exciting battle so far, and it continues through January! Anyway, we could use your help, even if for only a few hours a day! :)

Just a warning though, this is one of the 'polite' forums, not like off-topic, so behave, or someone will likely send you off with a red hiney! :D

This picture tells what's like our fight with Brony. We're under heavy fire from left and right. Another firepower(s) are much appreciated.
