burning dvds

i just got my first dvd burner. ive wasted 3 dvd+r's trying to figure out how to burn them so that a regular dvd player will play them. can someone tell me how to do this?

#1 you will have to provide the information of what burning software you are using before anyone can help you.
#2 If you are using the software correctly it may simply be a matter of the blank dvd's you are using.

For example a couple of months ago I picked up some blanks without looking to closely.
They turned out to be 16x and my dvd burner didn't know what to do with them.
Once I took them back and got the 8x blanks I was fine.

If you are looking to back up your personal movie collection (especially kids movies before they scratch them up), I have found DVD Shrink works very well about 95% of the time and it is free.
