Burning CDs for older CDRoms

How should I burn a data cd to have a better chance of compatibility with computers with older cdrom drives? Meaning do I use Mode 1, joliet, etc? I've given cds to people to find that while it works on my system, it doesn't work on theirs.

Use the slowest speed of your burner to burn CDs for them and use blanks with the blue-green color (Taiyo Yuden, etc) not the silvery, lt. green. The blue has higher contrast and works better with older drives.
Cleaning the optics in the old drives could also help. Use a cleaning CD or open the drives and use a swab with alcohol if you dare...

What Zepper said, I've also had better luck with darker blue/green dyed discs on older drives, as far as brands I think Sony and TDK are some of the best you can buy. The mode you use shouldn't matter as I'm pretty sure that just depends on the OS and not the hardware.
