Burning CD shuts down computer

I have a Teac 512EB02 with updated firmware (2.0D) and Adaptec 4.03a burning software. It is on its own channel (IDE1) as master. The other channel is HD and DVD-ROM (IDE 0). Often times in the middle of copying CD's, it will just shut down the computer and restart. Is there something wrong with the way I have this set up? I am running Win98SE on an iWill KK 266, 256 MB Crucial PC133 Cas2, SB Live! Value, Elsa Gladiac GeForce2 MX.

Thanks!

Have you tried a different setup.

HD on IDE1 as master
DVD as master on 2
cd-rw as slave on 2

You should never share a HD with a cd.

Also Master should be at end connection, and slave should be plugged into the middle connection of IDE cable.

Don't know if this is your problem, but it should be better anyway.

Also, do you have cache enabled in Adabtec? That is known to sometimes cause problems. The chances of that might be greater with the way you have things set up..........ie. source cd and hd cache sharing same ide.

How would I disable the Cache in the Adaptec software? I'm gonna try Nero and see if I get the same problem.

Also, when I opt to copy to the HD then burn to the CD-RW, I do not have the shut-down problem.

Try changing your setup like I said.

Look in the help index for adaptec to see if there is caching. I think there is, not sure though since I don't use it anymore.

With a program I used, caching used to make my burning fail everytime.

Also, is this only during CD Copy? Have you tried making an image of the
original first before burning?

CQuinn,

It does not happen when copying files from HD to CD-R.

JohnnyTT,

I reset the hardware as you suggested and was able to copy CD-ROM to CD-RW no problem. I will try a couple more times to verify success.

PS. The reason I had it set up the way I did was after asking anandtechians. 5 people agreed that I should have it HD, DVD-ROM (IDE 0) and CD-RW on (IDE-1). Thanks for setting it straight JohnnyTT!!
