Howdy,

I recently purchased a SolTek SL-K8AN2E-GR Motherboard, which has a Promise 20579 onboard controller. Its primarily intended for SATA and RAID configurations, but it also includes an IDE channel which I have hooked up a CDRW and DVDRW to. Media can be read from both devices just fine, but neither will burn media. Nero does not recognize either drive as writable, and Fireburner does not recognize the drives at all.

The controller is showing up in device manager as "WinXP Promise SATAII150 579 (tm) IDE Controller).

Any suggestions on what to do in order to get the writable feautres of the drives to work?

Thanks!

I would first start by updating nero with the latest patches, that solves 99% of problems like this.

afaik, I am running the latest version (6.3.1.20).

Continuing to play around with the drivers, unfortunately not having much luck. If anyone else has a recommendation, please do not hesitate to add your insights!

According to someone over at the SharkyExtreme forums, this is a long standing problem with add on ide controllers (ATAPI devices fully functioning).

He said my best bet was to just rearrange my drives so that the cd/dvdrw's were on the nVidia controllers, and to put one of my extra non-atapi drives (in this case, one of my harddrives) on the Promise addon. I was concerned that there would be a performance hit with the high speed HD on the Promise which goes the PCI bus, but after benchmarking the drive on each channel, it turns out there is none. This solution will work out fine for me.

Thanks anyway for the advice, I hope this post helps someone searching through the forums for a similar problem.
