Burning at 8x

i just swapped out a HP300i 4x for an Emprex 8x dvd +/- R/RW that i got today at Frys for $89...

when using nero 5.5, the only option it gives me to burn at is 4x or 2.4x.

I also tried several other utilites (like Nero Info Tool) and all of them state the max write speed of this drive is 4x.

is the max write speed determined by the blank media or by the drive itself? I am using memorex 4x +r media...

i also upgraded to latest firmware for the drive and upgraded to latest version of nero 5.5...

tia for any help...

I guess we are taling about DVDs here ... my understnading is that the media needs to be 8x or you will burn the DVD at the platter rated speed. Thus you are not burning at 8x. I think...

pretty sure they don't sell 8x media (at least I have never seen it or heard about)...on several hot deal threads for 8x burners, 4x media is used in 8x burners and confirm that it burns at higher than 4x speeds...
