Burning a DVD that will work in most all players

Hi. I'm trying to compile a collection of videos that will be rendered using Sony's Vegas Video. I'm going to attempt to burn the final product to a DVD and give it to a friend who isn't very tech-savvy.

Is there a way to guarantee my friend will be able to view my DVD on their home DVD player? Should I use +R, -R, a certain brand, certain program, etc.

Most newer DVD players produced during the last few years support both -R and +R media.

However, for the best possible compatibility, use bitsetting if your burner supports it. Bitsetting sets a flag on the disc that makes players think the media is DVD-ROM, and BS can only be used on +R media, not -R.

Other than that, -R is compatible with more older players than +R. When in doubt, try both. If it works, +R is faster burning. A real problem can exist if your friend lives in a place where the players are PAL vs. NTSC. I learned that when I send my brother a DVD of family reunion photos - he lives in UK.
