Burner locks...drives vanish

I have been having a problem with my CD-ROM drives. When i go to burn a CD it gets to a certain percentage and then nero stops. Nothing actually hangs, the time elapsed counter still goes and stuff, but nothing happens. So I do a warm reboot(aka hit the reset button) and the PC boots, the IDE detection takes a few extra seconds and then says the CD-ROMs arent there. Both my CD-ROM drives are on the same channel due to the way my case is laid out, but this has never given me trouble before. I had rounded cables on my CD-ROMs so i figure that I was the problem, so i got rid of the rounded cables and went back to plain old ata66/100 cables, but got the same results. Any ideas?
thanks,
-doug

I had several problems with the rounded IDE cables.. so much so, that I replaced them with standard IDE ata100 cables.. my problems went away.. but yours did not.. so, how are your drives setup in your BIOS? do you have it set to auto detect? or do you detect them when you are in your BIOS, thus defeating or turning off the autodetect? or are you manually setting them up in your BIOS?
I perfer to turn off autodetect by having the BIOS detect them while editing/changing the BIOS.
or, you other IDE cables could be bad. can happen..
or, you cdrom is going bad.. can happen
or, you IDE cables are not seated correctly in your cd rom or on your motherboard.
check the jumpers on your cd roms. make sure, if you are using the mater/slave scheme, that you have those set up correctly.
what OS are you using, and what writer software (oh, did you say NERO?)
maybe there is a conflict with your writer software, and another piece of software you recently loaded. sometimes software will not work correctly if another piece of software has modified something on your OS (ie files). look for updates for fixes on your writer software web pages.
just some suggestions.

I dont know what to think. Everything seems to be seated right. I just took the drive setup all apart and replugged everything. I think the BIOS is fine because normally the drives are there. It is only after I attempt to burn that they go away. I just built a new system at xmas and parts have been getting swapped all over the place and I dont recall when I last burned a good CD. And the odds of 2 bad ide cables in a row are pretty low. How about the board? Could the controller be bad? What about turning DMA mode on or off? If it is the board controller would using a seperate controller card fix the problem?

I still need help with this problem. I tried to burn from the hard drive but i still had no luck. So that means that it isnt a problem with my CD-ROM drive. I dont know what the heck is wrong. please help.
thanks,

yes.. more details.. what is your OS? Winxp, Win98 ???
your using NERO, what version?
have you tired removing your CDrom from your control panel>systems>cdroms ? and then hitting refresh, thus re-installing the drivers.
and if you have a VIA chipset, have you applied the latest VIA updates? there is a IDE update out there, from VIA.
