Burner doesnt want to work...please help

I am having terrible problems with my burner. I have a 12x plextor IDE burner and it just doesnt want to work. When ever I try to burn it gets a certain precentage through the process and then it locks. This happened after I started using my new Epox 8KHA+ board. I thought it might be the IDE controller or something, but I can install games and stuff with no problems. I am gernerally using Nero to burn, or try to burn. So anyway, here is exactly what happens. I try to burn and it gets a certain precentage through, usually in the teens and then it just stops burning. The duration counter still keeps ticking, nothing seems to lock, just the precentage bar stops. So then I try and cancel the burn and it lets me do that, but the burn window wont go away. So then I hit the restart button and both my CD-ROM and CD-RW are gone from the IDE detection thing(they are both on the same channel). My friend told me that this is because when I do a restart the drives are still not "released" because when I do a full power down and restart the drives reappear. I really dont know what to think at this point, but Im getting really frustrated. Any thoughts?

I think I am. Im using what I downloaded from download.com last night. It just occured to me to try the built in burning software in XP and it worked fine. So as much as I dont want to Im going to try Easy CD 5. Does that burn 700MB cds yet(I know 4.0 didnt)?
