Can't read the files on the disk in windows explorer or from dir cmd in dos mode. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. TIA, Paul

bacillus--hadn't thought about that. Will give it a try Monday on the old generic unit.

BlakkIce--doubt that it is a buffer under run...same cd install properly on the w85/w98 and w2k test machines. Have this problem on the winme machines with all of our program disk--which we produce.

Thx for the quick responses. Still looking for a silver bullet. Paul

This may be a dumb question. When you burned the CD did you select make a music CD or data CD.
I have seen the same thing when the wrong one was selected in Adaptec ECD Creator.

OOP's, If it installs and works in another operating system then the above does not apply.

I think what your problem is that the cdrom drive has trouble reading cdr's burned at fast speeds (my 36x creative drive struggled to read data cd's burned at anything higher than 1x and would either crash the machine or recognize it as an audio cd)

And i think it's just a coincidence that your experienceing this under WinME. Some things you could try are turning off DMA for the cdrom or just burn the cd at a slower speed.

Hehe...what i ended up doing is putting my fist into the tray and replacing it with a 16x pioneer dvd rom

frover2000--working for a commercial sofyware house. Yhey are using some internal Plextors--can't be higher than 8x--and a duplicator to burn this sw. CD quality is high. We have over 10,000 installs in the field--judhing from the website stats...about 5% on winme.

Client's Dell has a 48x cd and a LG 8x burner. Both see disk as audio. Our winme test machine #1 was able to read our cd's prior to the new install of winme. We also have another winme test machine which exhibits the same problem. The w2k machines have no problem reading them. There is no audio on our sw.

Thx, Paul
