I've got an internship at IBM in Burlington for the summer. I wanted to know what its like, what to expect for the months June-Sept. Where are the good areas to live? Whats there to do? What areas to avoid (though I currently kick intravenous drug users off my stairs so I can't imagine it could be worse than that). so on and so on. I've read a bit about it but first hand accounts always seem better.

Living in Burlington for 20 years, went to BHS, now to go UVM in my last semester :p So I think I am your expert. The only "bad" (and its not even bad) is in certain parts of the"old north end". Since you will be Essex I assume, anything in Essex, South Burlington, Shelburne, Williston etc should be fine. I am living in the new north end in burlington and have been since 86. Its really quiet and a great place to live work and raise a family in. Let me know if you need a hand or PM me.

There was one more thing I forgot to mention, how hard is it to get around without a car? The only way I'd have a car while there was if I bought a cheap beater and sold it before I came back to Seattle which is quite a hassle.

Depends on where you want to go. I used to take the bus from Burlington -> South Burlington on CCTA (Chittenden County). They also run a bus from Burlington -> Essex assuming you lived in the downtown burlington area. CCTA runs pretty much everywhere including southern VT, but can take FOREVER, for example when I was in middle school and wanted to go to the mall, you would have to go downtown first, get a transfer, then go to South Burlington. In a car this would have only took 10-15 minutes, where as it ususally took an hour otherwise. If you are going to be at IBM in essex, then I really have no clue how the buses run out there.

We have public transportation, via CCTA, but it kind of sucks. IF you live in Essex you can bike/walk to the IBM plant, it's right in the junction. Housing is way cheaper out here anyways than in downtown Burlington. Overall the summer is alright, might hit the mid to high 90s now and then, mostly in the 70s and 80s.

Different Burlington. We're the home of Ben & Jerry's, Howard Dean, and Phish.

Liberal loudmouths, all.

Basically, yes. Although Ben & Jerry aren't all that bad, my dad knew Ben Cohen from years back, spent a 4th of July or two at his house, nice guy. Phish can just go to hell, and Howard Dean is a horrendous tool who f-d this state over in a variety of ways.

So it's like a big hippy state?

Wow, who let you back? :)

Rise from the dead ye old thread!

Thanks for the help thus far! I'm currently looking at two apartments, one downtown and one in essex, I'm leaning towards the one downtown since it seems like there'd be more stuff in walking distance.

Anyways I did have another question, what are good cell phone providers in the Burlington area? I'm looking to get a cell phone shortly and figure might as well get one I know will work out there.

Thanks again!

Yeah, the only part of vermont in general to stay out of its the old north end. But even the old north end is probably a lot better then the good parts of town in most major cities. It is fvcking beautiful here in the summer. Downtown has a lot of good places to eat, and I guess there's more things to do. And by things to do, I mean bars. :p

Where are you camping crusty?

HAHA old north end isnt even that bad, although we did have our first homicide on the year. I played soccer with the kid and had his teacher in the 7th grade :( Downtown does have some good bars and food.

CountZero- best coverage is probaly Verizon obviously. We also have unicell and I believe you can use cingular phones up here. I have sprint only because I get an awesome deal on the plan.

I definlty think an VERMONT ATOT meet should happen, hopefully I will be around thi summer.
