Burglars Steal 220-Pound Gold Bar

Visitors touch a 100 kilogram (220 pound) gold bullion ...
TOKYO - A group of burglars stole a massive block of gold worth over $2 million from a Japanese museum in a heist that police said could have been prevented _ if only the curators hadn't left the showcases wide open.

The Ohashi Collection Kan museum in Takayama, in central Japan, kept the 220-pound gold bullion unguarded by sensors or even by a case because it wanted visitors to be able to touch it, local police officer Shinji Kurake said Monday.

On Sunday, three masked men made off with the gold block in broad daylight, Kurake said. A female employee who was alerted by the sound of their footsteps tried to intervene, but was roughly pushed aside.

"We were very shocked ... but of course this was a big block of gold, and there was no security," Kurake said. "I suppose they could have been a little more careful."

Police were still searching for the group, who were thought to be driven away by a fourth accomplice. The Ohashi museum purchased the gold bar in 1994 for 200 million yen, according to its Web site. In today's gold prices, the block would be worth about $2.1 million.

The museum was closed for an "emergency holiday" on Monday and could not be reached.

So stupid. At least hire someone to stand there and look mean to prevent such things. These guys are just going to chisel it up into small pieces to sell so they won't get caught.

but who would have thought someone could easily carry a 220 block of gold out of the museum undetected?

if it was in broad daylight, how did no one except the girl mentioned see them?

was the museum totally empty or what? and the guys had to have been walking slowly to carry something that heavy, wouldn't you think?

or is 220 lbs not as heavy as i think it is?

220 is pretty damn heavy to run around with... it would require more than 1 person.

The average gold bar that is portrayed in movies and TV is typically the 12.5kg ones (about 27lbs), IIRC

So that was a freaking huge gold bar.

It says "a 4th accomplice", so I'm assuming there were 3 guys doingf the actual robbery. That's still 73.3 pounds a piece. Difficult, but if they were all lifting the thing together and were in decent shape, definitely possible.

**LOL**
Current gold price right now is $659.40 per oz. Those small bars are $284,860 each. Pretty penny eh?
The 220lb bar with todays price of gold.....$2,321,088
Precious Metals pricing

And consider the adrenaline factor. I imagine they practiced with a 300 lb block before hand. Got it down like they wanted. Then when it's time for the real deal, adrenaline + 220 lbs instead of 300lb easy cheesy. Dump it in a bag, 2 guys on each side, one behind, haul ass.

Japanese as a whole are very trusting. I'm pretty sure police officers don't even carry guns.

I bet the girl that was "roughly pushed aside" was in on it. That's how they pulled it off.

220 lbs. in a backpack kinda sling contraption would still be very cumbersome, fatiguing, and would give the person a gate that looked like he was a 100 years old.
