ID/assess, verbal commands, maybe bang..unless there's something else going on (i.e. front door just got kicked in, etc). The last thing I need to do is shoot some drunk who stumbled up to the wrong house. Now if we have a confirmed hostile intruder, that's another story..

Regardless, Glock 36 with..Federal Hydrashocks, I believe. My 870 is a little long to swing around inside.

umm...if he's dead then the threat's stopped, right?

you never tell anyone you shot to kill, that means you intended to kill him and makes you look guilty. you shoot to stop the threat.

I've never understood this thing about "shoot to kill" vs "shoot to injur"
How about I shoot his chest and not give a shit what happens? If he lives, good for him. If he dies, that's cool too. It's not like I'm aiming for the chest and making some kind of a choice whether he lives or dies.

I think anyone who is informed about personal defense knows that you neither shoot to kill nor shoot to injure. You simply shoot to disable and LIVE with the results.

It's basically something that'll get you tripped up in court. Your intent is to stop the threat - whether he lives or dies is not relevant to that decision. It's a little odd, but spend some time with lawyers and you'll understand. :p

DING DING DING!!!! We have a winner!

saying you shot the guy to kill him makes you look like a murderer, like it was planned, or your intention was to kill him.

saying you shot the guy to stop a threat makes you look like someone who was defending himself.

You're troubles aren't gone with the bad guy being dead - they're just beginning. You now have to go to court and defend yourself in a legal setting.

I'm being 100% serious when I say you guys should research this stuff. It isn't as simple as just pulling a trigger.

Only if you are dealing with an idiot DA who is looking to get re-elected or an idiot ADA who is looking to move up.

Who else presses charges against a homeowner who shoots someone he does not know in his own house in the middle of the night?

Well, you're close, but not quite.

In Canada AFAIK you are supposed to:

1) Avoid the conflict, ie hide in a locked room
2) If they confront you in that room, you can use appropriate force to defend yourself. For example, if you are 6'5" and 260lb and the burglar is 5'5" and 145lb, unarmed, and you beat him to death with a bat... that's murder. But if there's 3 guys with knives and you beat them all to hell with the bat and one or two "accidentally" die, that's fine. If you keep beating the guy after they are all incapacitated.. murder.

Although to your point about guns.. I suppose you're right. It's a very legal gray area about what's appropriate force to defend yourself. Three guys with bats, you have a gun, you shoot and kill all 3. Was that appropriate force? Who knows.... you'll find out in court.

So a parent should barricade themselves in their bedroom and the kids, well fuck 'em. They should have gotten their own guns?

none of those options would be what i do, if its just me in the house i would retreat to a spot i have the tactical advantage, call the cops and if i heard the perp get closer i would rack my shotgun (surveys of criminals have shown almost 100% of them will run if faced with a shotgun, unless they are there for a personal reason or are just mentally sick) after than if he kept advancing i would put a load of 00 buck in his chest, if there were other ppl in the house who couldn't defend themselves i would call the cops and start clearing the house. at that point if i saw anyone i would yell "freeze" or whatever catch phrase you want just to make sure its not someone that was in the house before up and wondering. Then again im not the only thing a criminal has to worry about in my house, i also have a 165lb rottweiler

I live in America where I'm scared that everyone's going to break into my house and rape my family (like we're something so special), so I make sure I have a gun on me at all times.

Have you also thrown away any fire extinguishers and ripped the 9 and 1 buttons off of your phone? Only the fearful need to be able to put out a fire or call the police, right?

I'm a fan of Roman laws, you steal from me I cut both hands off. Nice sharp axe when the dude picks up my ps. If he tries to run I cut his feet off.

That seems crazy to announce a warning. If you're even in a situation where you've surprised the burglar, more than likely he is out of sight or his back is to you; otherwise he'd have seen you. How can you know if he is armed or unarmed with his back to you? Anyone with the gall to break into a house when people are home more than likely has no qualms about carrying a weapon.

What if you start talking and he instantly shoots you? Why give him that opportunity.

There are some serious fools here that have not done any kind of high adrenaline, high blood pressure shooting. You're accuracy gets to be so bad when your heart starts unless you train weekly. Seriously a 10 foot target can be very hard to hit. Anyone that carries a gun for self defense needs to get their heart beating when they go to a shooting range. Go sprint/jog for a mile then go shoot and see the difference.

10 feet is also the lethal range of a person armed with a hand weapon. Once they're within 10 feet of you, they're lethal with a knife, hands, bat whatever. Why let them get that close before putting them down?

How are those shells performing for u? Opinions I've seen so far are mixed... Mind commenting?

I've only heard positive reviews myself. I like them a lot. I took them out to a buddy's farm and we had some fun with a couple boxes of them. Basically they pattern a lot like regular 9 pellet 00 buck loads, but that .65 caliber marble offers more penetration/stopping power than 3 more 00 buck pellets. I haven't tested shells at range (30+ yards), but I would assume that large marble increases your range as well. I will do some tests on this and comment later.

is it just me or does that shell look short? anyways i have 3" 00 bucks in my shotgun, so 12 .33 pellets come out

They are 2 3/4 shells. There is debate between 2 3/4 vs 3" shells. Advantage to 2 3/4 is I can get more in my gun and there is less recoil so follow-up shots are quicker, and this is a bigger deal with an auto-shotgun IMO. Advantage to 3" shells is there is more lead. Most 'experts' agree that 2 3/4 shells are all-around better

Although I do have several 3" slugs in my SHTF bandolier. Ask me how those feel out of a recoil operated auto-shotgun with no recoil pad.

This.

Amazing how ppl have a weird sense of misdirected compassion for a criminal breaking in their own house. Shoot out a knee? Rock salt shells? You have to kidding me. A guy breaks in to rob/rape/kill and it boggles my mind to hear people wanting to play nice...
