Seeing all these Nvidia vs. ATI threads poping out lately, it made me wonder what happen to those die-hard 3Dfx fans back in the old days.
I've been away from the hardware scene for last three years, however I recall how people used to argue about if 32bit rendering makes any difference over 16 bit rendering, plus all those tiny details people here used to FIGHT about.
Anway, what happened after 3Dfx disappeared? If you were one of 'em, would you tell us which VGA card you use in these days?

EDIT : oops. I meant to post this thread in General Hardware section. Please erase this thread mods. Thanks.

This is the right group to post this topic in so it should stay IMO.

I was a big 3dfx fan who has owned most of their video cards starting with a 3dfx voodoo, then a banshee, v3 2000 and then a v3 3000. I then switched to PowerVR and I owned a Kyro2 for almost a year before finally switching to Nvidia.

I really liked 3dfx too, I only owned one card though cause at the time i didn't have the $$$. I had a Voodoo 3 3000 AGP and I loved it ;) It was my first 3D card :). After that I got a GeForce DDR 32 meg, and eventually I got a GeForce 2 Ti 64 meg, which is what is in my system right now.

3dfx made some killer cards with Voodoo 1-3, went a bit downhill with the 5'er, and then died as we all know. imo, we should be thankful for their voodoo1 and 2 cards in particular, they helped spawn a revolution in 3d game graphics without doubt.

they had soem good products, not sure if id call myself a fan after seeing to many fan posts.

I was new to computers when v3 3000 came out and it was my first card, second was the 5500 and i ended up with a gts at the same time, the 5500 looked hell of lot better but people said that didnt matter, the (ack! edit) the nvidia card was faster and ran 3dmark better.

If 3dfx were around today the market would be a better place I think. We need more makers of viable game chips.

they did not "buy" the company. they bought the patents, brandnames, technology, and took the bulk their engineers. they then let the company collapse. so they would not have to provide me with my lifetime warrenty and drivers support for my cards.

Well,

I bought a Voodoo 5 5500 when it came out. Paid through the nose for it of course. That card is now obsolete. No T&L shader.

I play Anarchy Online, which it does work for that game, but I also play on a machine with a GeForce 4 MX ??? . The GeForce just blows the Voodoo away.

It's still fullfilling my current needs, but I don't really have any good comments to give them. I feel that buying that card was a bad decision.

On a brighter note. I just bought a 9700 Pro for my new rig. I gotta wait until next week to get it though. Darn holidays. Messing up my shipping schedule.

LOl...personally I think Chizow had something when he said that ex-3dfx went to the Ati camp just to hate nvidia. =D

lol, i went from a voodoo5 to a geforce3 to a 9700pro so there goes that theory. i think most people who did avoid nvidia did it to avoid the lower image quality though.

Yea, I would agree with that.

I wasn't comfortable with the thought of buying an Nvidia card just because of the way they killed 3DFX. Hell, they could have at least supported the drivers for a year or two.

Stuck with a card, no warranty, no new drivers (well 3rd party still comming through)...etc

A voodoo 1 pushing out opengl for quake 1 was the greatest thing i've everseen!!!:Q

After that i bought a voodoo 3 for quake 2 then played quake 3 it ran both of them with no problems. I like 3dfx because speed was their first concern.

I moved to nvidia after trying to play dark darkage of camelot with a voodoo3. That was a no go, low frame rate. :brokenheart:probably due to no support for the card from Mythic(dicks). So a gf2mx remideed that problem. Then a Gf3 replaced it about a year and a half later. I think i am gonna pick up a 5900ultra cause i have had no problems with nvidia.

its really difficult to be a 3dfx fan these days, since there are no 3dfx cards that are competitive with modern video cards.

3dfx zealots all comitted suicide en masse shgortly after the launch of the GF1 SDR/DDR. The few that lived on are holed up in one of the forums of the small handful of 3dfx fan sites still remaining.... their presently occupied chanting the name of the non-existent mythical "Revenge" GPU that has been supposed to bring 3dfx back from the dead for the last couple years.

Not so fast Rand!......ok, carry on. :)

I still look back at 3Dfx and see a company that deserved the monicker, "The Way it's meant to be played". 3Dfx rocked! They delivered(albeit late at times) what they promised and they promised speed and quality. My first 3Dfx card was a Voodoo2, awesome. My next was the much maligned, but ahead of it's time the Voodoo5 5500.

Sure, the Voodoo5 5500 lacked HW TnL which in this day is a requirement, but at the time it introduced an even more important feature, FSAA. 3Dfx was knocked on hardcore for this feature, by both the industry and various "fans". It was called useless and undesired, yet today it is more scrutinized and more people fret over it when purchasing a vidcard than HW TnL. 3Dfx always maintained that they give the gamer what it "needs", to this day I don't see any evidence that they ever failed to deliver on that point.

ATI 8500LE here btw, likely to be replaced by another Radeon.

My first 3d graphics came with a voodoo 3 3000. I still have one at work for after-work or lunch counter-strike and such and I have to say half-life mods look great on a voodoo. I have a gf4ti4200 at home but there's something about that voodoo look with half-life!

One thing I loved about 3dfx is they had the best drivers period. Not 1 time did I ever run into any issues with games on their drivers. I wish that could be said for Nvidia and ATI.

I liked the 'soft' appearance of the 3Dfx API (I can't even remember what it was called..... Glide?).

Love to have that look back with the speed of today's cards.

I was a 3dfx guy in the day.

I swore I'd never buy ATI, but once the radeon line came out I changed my mind... :)

I was a fan of 3Dfx when the Voodoo came out. That was the best upgrade up until then I had ever made. Going from crappy slow software mode to 3D accelerated was like cybercrack. I dont play the ATI vs. Nvidia thing today I just by whichever card I think will do the job. I have owned cards from 3Dfx, ATI and Nvidia including the ATI AIW 9700 pro and the FX 5800 Ultra. The current leader of all the cards I have owned right now is the 5800 Ultra.
