Bunch of hard drive questions

I currently have a 20g hd and 40g hd both are 5400 rpm and udma. I also have a cd rom on a different ide cable. The 40 gig is my windows hd right now.

i just bought a 200g 7200 u ATA

Questions:

1. If i install the 200g 7200rpm on the same cable as the cd rom, will it be slower?
2. I want to format and transfer the files from the 40 and 20 gig to the 200 and as well install windows on the 200 gig. How would I do this using only one computer?
3. If I were to move the slave 20g hd to the second ide cable, will my files still be intact?
4. If I were to set the 40g master to slave, will my files still be there?

IIRC, with modern IDE controllers, having the CDROM drive on the same cable as the hard drive itself will not affect the performance. Someone correct me if this is wrong.

Plug in your new hard drive and then boot from the Windows 2000/XP CD. Choose to install Windows and select the appropriate drive. Format using NTFS (recommended) and then you can transfer files from drive to drive.

If you move around the drives, there will be no data loss.

If you change the master/slave settings on drives, there will be no data loss.

*** Make sure you correctly set the appropriate drive to master and the other to slave on each cable. Not doing so will lead to conflicts.

THANX!

another question

when using the windows on the newly formatted 200 gig, will there be a NTFS protection on the 40 gig (which has the older winxp) preventing me from accessing it?

and does the position on the cable must correspond to the master or slave (like does it matter where I put the slave hd on the cable)?

and are u definately sure that changing master/slave settings will not affect the data?

If you did not change permissions while using Windows 2000/XP on either the drives or any folders (so folders have "Everyone" permitted) then you should have no problems. If you encrypted any documents/files you will run into problems as they are not unlockable. If you do run into a problem with permissions, you can right click on a drive(s) and change ownership (remember to include subfolders and files).

Generally, the very end of the cable (after it is plugged into the IDE port) will be the master drive's place. The middle one is for the slave drive.

Changing the master/slave jumpers will not affect the data or cause data loss.
