How extensive is the bullying problem in private schools? I went to a public school, and the bullying there was relentless. I would never want to subject my children to that hell.

I went a private school from 1st-9th grade. There was zero bullying.

1) The kids come from good families, so the quality of kids is much higher than public school.

2) The parents have a huge influence in how the school is run because the parents are paying for the school to operate.

Very cool. I think I will send my children to private school. I have another question. In public schools, it seems like the dumb jocks are celebrated and the smart people who actually have a future are the subject of endless ridicule. In private schools, do the dumb jocks have higher status over the smart people?

When I was still in high school (public) many of the "jocks" also were taking more then a few ap classes so there wasn't really a line on intelligence so much as social ability. But even then very minimal ridicule, if it existed at all.

But then maybe I was just in a district that didn't suck.

Thankfully, you will never breed.

Uncalled for. Nothing he said provoked that kind of response.

I attended private school from grades 6-12.
There were 160 in my graduating class.

There were minimal amounts of bullying in middle school and by high school it was almost non existent.
I attribute that mostly to the reasons listed above.

I found that most students were very well rounded in their athletic/ scholastic activities.
Athletes were held to the same strict standards as everyone else.
It was normal for the "jock" football/ lacrosse types to enroll in multiple AP level courses.

Of course there were a few bad apples, but the majority of students realized that their parents were paying a premium for their education, and took advantage of the opportunity.

EDIT: The public school system in my home town was notoriously bad. With test scores and college acceptance rates to prove it.

I went to a private high school and bullying wasn't a big problem. There were a few assholes but they were rare. It was a fairly big school with over 1k students but it felt like everyone knew each other in some way.

Admittedly I was homeschooled beyond 6th grade so the dynamics may change once puberty reaches full force, but the jocks in my public school (also admittedly an upper-class mostly white and Asian school) were mostly nice. The dickhead bullies I knew were the preppy spoiled fucks.

He is called your father so pay some respect. :p

I wouldn't exactly say jocks are around before high school or a year or two beforehand as before puberty hits everyone is mostly the same and the competition is not as large in grade school sports.

Maybe private schools have better discipline as well. Kids in public school tend to lack respect. Mostly because it wasn't instilled in them from their parents. Teachers can't do much these days.

If I have the money, my kids will not be going to public school. I had such a bad experience growing up, mostly due to low quality education and uncaring teachers. The little snot noses that push the other kids around are only the icing on the shit sundae.

It all depends. Though if your kid is getting bullied you should instill some confidence in him to stand up for himself. I attended both very small private schools(50 kids/grade) and large public schools(700 kids/grade) and had amazing experiences at both. Did I meet bullies at both types of school? Yes, so what? Are you gonna home school your kid? I don't think so. I wasn't cliquey with my friends and pretty much hung out with everybody. The more friends your kid can make, the smaller the issue of bullying becomes. I actually enjoyed my public education more than private because the student body was so large that I had ample friends and always had fun.

Don't shield your kid from experiences. They may end up actually improving him.

One need not have good families to decide to bully.

Priavte schools toss out bullies. Thus bullying is usually pretty low compared to a public school.

When I went to college from high school it was like the difference between night and day. Both were public, but the problem with public high school was that a majority of those kids didn't belong in school and could never get into college. I wouldn't be surprised if 2 out of every 25 people at my high school are dead or in jail now.

Public education needs to be abolished, not really because of bullying, but because it drills pro-U.S. government propaganda into the heads of too many.

all depends on the people.

i went to a private/catholic HS, and in my junior year i was picked as the goalie of my soccer team. all of the seniors wanted another senior to play, but he was academically ineligible. i tried to do my best as goalie but apparently that wasn't good enough (never mind that i never got any goalie-specific drills in practice) so eventually most of the seniors decided to give me shit just about every day (for months straight). i dont know of a good way to explain the emotions and pain i felt...i was 99.9% of the way to quitting soccer, which i've played continuously since i was a child. i decided not to though and toughed it out.

was that the best option? i dunno.

Baseball bat ends bullying and you don't go to jail at that age.

If you're weak, the bullies will find you no matter whether it's a public school or a private one.

Yes, but they are not dumb in private schools who have standards so the bullying is less.

Infinitely more at the private school I went to, I was singled out as the "new guy" or the one that wasnt as smart as everyone else was. My public school education was of much much much higher quality and I meshed in a lot better (and did better academically as well).

Jokes on everyone in my private school class, I think only one of them ended up in grad school, the rest either did nothing with their lives or got pregnant. I'm a first year med student now :)

It feels like for me that they just differ in that public schools = more physical bullying like beaten up for lunch money while private schools = psychological bullying like being made fun of behind your back... manipulative stuff.
