I'm trying to set up an FTP server at school, so when i go home i can write back to it. So far i can only access it on the same ip for the first two slots and/or workgroup. Any idea how i change this so that i can just connect to it from home? For example, I want to connect to 144.154.122.111. My roomate with ip 144.154.122.119 can connect but the person down the street with ip 134.144.xxx.xxx can't connect. why?

The school most likely blocks the default FTP port which probably means it's against policy to run a FTP server.

Heh, well if they aren't blocking any old random port you choose to try, you should probably switch schools.

They almost certainly disallow incoming connections to their student segments.

My school does that (blocks all incoming connections, you can only set up a web server on port 80 if you get permission first so they open the port).

Not sure if this is applicable to you, but if you can set up a VPN connection with the school, then you can probably access it. That would be fine for you to access your own stuff from somewhere else, but not practical for a random person to be able to connect to your FTP.

we have a vpn but i think we only have like 128 mb's of space. the problem, when i go home i have music that i'd like to send up here so i zip it in rar files. it comes out to be li 1.5 gigs.
