I was just watching CNN and on it they were talking about new tanks that would literally vaporize incoming rounds before they had the chance to hit the tank. No details were given beyond that, but man - wow. Thats better than superman.

I seriously doubt that will come to be in the near future as it seems to be a near impossibility. I mean, you could, in theory, "push" phyiscal rounds away with really strong magnets and maybe you could create some kind of energized armor that melted rounds... but that is really getting star trek like with the whole shields thing. I am more looking forward to the tanks that have LCD panels on their armor so they can "cloak". That would be really cool but so stinking expensive.

I heard a report of this also, but I can't remember the exact details......

I think it was able to detect the incoming round and to trigger an explosion that would destroy the round before it actually hits the tank, somewhat similar to reactive armor. It wasn't a forcefield or anything like that.....:)

What you all fail to realise is that both shields and cloaks are being worked on.

For the cloak, they use millions of fiberoptic cables wrapped around the tank and controled by computer. They can't make it invisable from every direction, but they can make it darn near invisable from a mile away from one direction. Considering the M1A2 has a lethal range of 6 miles, that is plenty.

Shields are being worked on as well, but are probably further off. They already have developed an electromagnetic shield that deflects bullets, but it can't currently be fit onto a tank. It is the size of several buildings and uses an insane amount of power.

The fact that they show both these items on the Discovery Channel leads me to believe this stuff is not that far off.

The big danger to tanks are HEAT, SABOT, and AGM-65-a-likes.

Cloaks don't do much good if you still radiate more heat than a grilling convention.

I love how cloaking technology works in games.

Starcraft:
Marine1: Hey look at that blurry thing over there
Marine2: Yeah, the blur is getting closer, I wonder what it is?
Marine1: No clue, It's probable nothing
Marine2: Hey, it's like the blur is right here already
Marine1: OMG, I've been slashed by the blur!!!
Marine2: OMG!!! How can this be possible!!
Marine1: Should I shoot at the blur!?!?
Marine2: What makes you think the blur is responsible?
Marine1: Well...it slashed at me.
Marine2: You're just imagining it, it's just a paper cut
Marine1: All the same, I'd feel better if we moved along.
Marine2: ok
Marine1: hey look, the blur is following us
Marine2: It's probably nothing to get worried about.
<Science Vessel comes along>
Both Marines: Holy !@#$ how the hell did he get so close without us seeing him!

CNC Red Alert 2
Rhino Tank1: Hey look, it's a tree
Rhino2: What about it?
Rhino1: It appears to be shooting at us
Rhino2: Don't be stupid, trees can't shoot tanks
Rhino1: Yeah, you're probably right, we should move along.

Warcraft2
Grunt1: Hey, who's building the tower?
Grunt2: What tower?
Grunt1: Look over there by those stupid peons, that tower is building itself.
Grunt2: It's probably just the heat
Grunt1: You're probably right
<3 minutes pass>
Grunt1: How the $#@! did those humans get a tower over there?!

This is true, but the cloak is not meant to protect against our own weapons, it is meant to work against nations like Iraq that lack FLIR and other such technology.

Keep in mind that the stuff they show to the public is technology that has been in the development cycle for a long enough time to be declassified.

Just think about the cool stuff they're working on that HASN'T been publicly announced :)
