Bullet Proof FTP must be spyware?

Here is why.. I got a copy of BulletProof FTP on my machine from a friend. He said its his registered version, so I copied everything over to mine so I could access a specific FTP Server. I used it twice and left it alone. Today while ftping something it gives me an error saying

"Illegal key detected - you are running Bullet Proof FTP illegally!
An illegal keymaker was used to create the key that BPFTP is registered with. Illegal use will not be tolerated.
If you register right away this incident will be overlooked. You will now be taken to the registration page automatically."

How the heck did it know unless it sometime checked with the server for validation of the licence key.

I sent an email off to my friend to see if he really purchased it or he had it cracked..

uhm...thats not spyware..thats you using an illegal key. They blacklist cd keys that they find overused or are created using an incorrect algorithm for the key generator...

Programs have started accessing manufacturers web sites with reg codes and such and certain black listed ones are reported back and then the software is disabled.

That happened to me when I was trying a cracked key on WinProxy 3.0, lol, it said "Thanks for purchasing WinProxy!!! Your IP address has been forwarded to the FBI AND NSA for further investagation!!"

Said something like that, I forget...nothin ever happened tho ;)

Go with the command-line ftp ;)
