Bulk converting .m4v to Universal Apple?

MotionMan

Lifer
I have over 250 .m4v movies I want to watch on various Apple devices (iPhone 3GS, 4, 4th(?) Gen Touch, 5th Gen iPod (video), Apple TV 1 & 2).

It seems VERY hit and miss as to where the movies will work.

Is there a way to convert them, in bulk (i.e. set it and forget it), to a "Universal Apple" format?

Because of that 5th gen iPod and the 3GS, a "universal Apple" format is going to be very low-end.

H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Low-Complexity Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.

If you ditch the ancient iPod and the 3GS, and you can move to the following: H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

Well, I guess I can have a couple versions. My main issue is the bulk conversion - I cannot do one at a time.

I also recommend Handbrake. Point it to the directory and it'll convert everything in there.

Ignore these jokers, the obvious answer is Handbrake. Make sure the video files are on the most powerful system you have, and if at all possible start with the best source possible (If you have the file on DVD, start with that).
