I know there was somewhere (newegg maybe?) that used to always have a LAN Starter Kit that would have a bunch of Cat5 cable and a crimper and stuff in a package.

Anyonw know if anyone does thsi any more? Or else where's a good place to get bulk cat5 cable? Need to wire up a few more locations in my house and will need a couple hundred feet.

Thanks.

Home Depot also carries the other necessary tools to make cables and even jacks for a house.

Home Depot carries 500ft and 1000ft Cat5e (Riser, Plenum, and one other variant), and they also carry a Networking/Telephone Starter Kit (includes punch-down tool, stripper, crimper, and 10 RJ-45 jack).

Heh. Checked Menards and Home Depot and they only have either 100' or 500'. I was hoping for 250'. I found a few online ad PCConnection has it for $19.36 and Cyberguys has it for $19.85.

But PC Connection also has a cromper for only like $11.

And a Punch DOwn tool for only $19.

Of course those are with the discount we get at work but darn good prices. Just gotta see if shipping kills it.

I thought you would be in the midwest. Saving big money at Menards, eh? Man, I hate that jingle.

Oh ******. I haven't heard that in 12 years, and as soon as I read that it was playing in my head.

Well, Menards is almost always cheaper than Home Depot. But we're finally getting Lowes stores in town so it should be interesting to see who does what in the next few years.

Good questions. Before I ask, I'm not questioning your judgment, I'm wondering myself. With all the wireless technology today, is Cat5 still the way to go? I'd like to wire another room and would need ~ 150' cable plus jacks. I'm thinking wireless ethernet + router may be a more versatile option for me, but I know I lose some capacity/speed. Any thoughts?

I think you are thinking of the computergeeks.com box of cable an tool. Just checked and its not on their site anymore. Or maybe just out of stock?

But what is the diff. between Riser, Plenum, etc... cable? Is it the casing or???

Well, if you plan to do a lot of file xferring, stay away from wireless. If you plan to have it setup for Internet/gaming/light-bandwidth usage, wireless works great. :)

I'm basically just doing it for the Tech factor. LAN jacks in every room, Cisco switch in the basement, etc.

I could go buy wireless cards for my desktops but would rather not. Wired is more reliable and has faster speeds. Plus I have an XBox I want to connect. And having your house wired for internet also increases it's resale value.

I basically want to have LAN, Cable, and Phone jacks in every room and multiples in our basement using keystone wall plates. I already have most of the house wired but some of it goes from one rother to another and then to the jacks. I want to have it all go from one location via my 12 port switch whic hmeans the runs to the far end of the house are 50+ feet.

Lowes actually has a really good price on Cat5 if you buy the entire 1000'. It is $50 for the spool and is cheaper than most places online especially after shipping.

Shoot me a PM if you're interested. If you don't think you'd use the speaker cable, you should be able to find just cat5 cable cheaper.

I originally bought that when I started getting into networking.

The crimper is sh!t. The ends are sh!t. The cable is okay. If you want to do it properly, you need some decent ends (preferably with load bars, really), and an Ideal Telemaster... P/N 69-696 or something like that. Mine's in the car, so I don't have the number in front of me.
