Police on Sunday arrested a Bulgarian man who tried to board a flight at Atlantic City airport carrying two box cutters and a pair of scissors. Airport screeners noticed the suspicious items when scanning his backpack, and a hand search yielded two boxcutters concealed within a package of hand lotion and a pair of scissors embedded into a bar of soap. The man had purchased a one-way ticket to Myrtle Beach, SC. LINK

Now, this SOUNDS suspicious and all, but I'm sure this dude wasn't planning a hijack or anything. He said he packed the items that way to keep them from damaging other items in his backpack (they were sharp and all.) I just wanted to point out how foreigners travelling in America must feel pretty dumb when stuff like this happens!

What size scissors can fit in a bar of soap? Nail scissors? What's he gonna do with that? Hijack a Fisher-Price dumptruck? The boxcutter/scissor hijacking will not work anymore.

Actually the items were in a travel soap BOX and a lotion BOX. They weren't hidden in soap or lotion per say.

I watched the news last night and the "teaser" was: "Hidden in soap and lotion". Then when they actually got to the story they told the truth.

Well, that's different. I am glad to see that security is on their toes.

According to authorities, it was an innocent event. They think the guy had the items for business purposes. Something to do with his job.

Man I HATE when the media does that! Seriously though, the Reuters article I am quoting literally says "embedded" as if the scissors were pressed into the soap (which would be a weird thing to do if you're not a terrorist!)

My roommate succeeded in bringing a boxcutter onto an airplane in his carry-on this August. It wasn't picked up by the x-ray, and he wasn't randomly searched, so it made it on. That's pretty much proof that the current security measures aren't any good. Either search everybody, or don't search at all. I should mention that it wasn't intentional. They were in his work pants, and he didn't know there were there until we got to my house in NY.

Another example of how misguided the US has been with airport security: I went to Brazil with my brother when I was in 9th grade (7 years ago), and I had my school backpack with me. In the front pocket I had a pair of scissors that were about 10" long. The US didn't have any problems letting me on the plane with them, but when it came time to fly home, the Brazillian authorities confiscated them. Granted, this was 7 years ago, and I was a kid, so not much of a threat, but they never should have made it on the plane in the first place.
