Buisness Idea, would it work?

Well me and a Freind were tossing around ideas for a Computer gaming cafe/Computer store last night at work. My idea was that you would open this place up near a major college campus and charge an hourly fee to play network games on the stores network (say 10-20 computers to start off with) also including a high speed internet connection for internet gamin. then offer computer parts, software, games, upgrading, and complete computers. I kinda off handedly mentioned it to my dad who is now retired and he sounded real interested in the idea and said if I did the research and figured out if it was a real possiblity to fly he would help me bankroll/find investors to start the buisness.

what do you think? yes?, no? too much compition from the bestbuy type chains to even attempt the hardware side? any input is helpful

I would say too much competition from the network side. I don't know of anyone here on campus who would want to pay to play LAN games when we can play them here for free. You wouldn't get many student customers.

1) Requires massive capital (top of the line computers, broadband, retail space, etc.)

2) If you don't get an awesome location, you're screwed

3) Not that popular nowadays.. especially with building computers, as most large companies have you beat in every aspect.

Sorry to just list the pitfalls, but it's been discussed before and it isn't as lucrative as some think.

One opened up about a year ago here and I think its doing okay. Alot of closed though too.....odds are against you for sure.

those kind of business in here san francisco are making huge money if you ask me.. all the highschool students and college students going there to spend their times... and I am seeing they are making some very good money.. also in hk they offer sandwich, shower and other service (no xxx stuff) to catch their customers

you might be able to make money on the retail side but i don't know about the gaming cafe idea as most college campuses already have high-speed connections and all the games floating around...

1) the internet gaming idea *might* work. depends on location.
2) network gaming: meh, might, might not.
2) upgrading computers for others *might* work, but only if you go to them. (i.e.: they come to store, put in order, you go to dorm)
3) parts, software, complete systems: i would say a no-go, because bigger retail chains can easily match / beat prices (and also handle returns well), and can provide better tech support (you don't want to deal with this, trust me.)

wow kinda like this idea although the tech support could be a major problem

was also thinking on the upgrade side I know I would'n't have a chance to keep in price but was thinking if I offerd free installation of things such as video cards, sound cards...etc as long as i'm within 10-20% price of standard prices at places like bestbuy it might still fly

But will you offer as good a warrantee? And if you are going to a college town, most of your customers are going to know how to do it themselves anyway.

not really a "college town" although its still big (Arizona state) and i don't agree with the theory that they all know how to do it them selfs i've installed 20 or 30 computer upgrades over the past 2 years for friends who didn't have a clue

I doubt the cyber cafe idea would work around a college town because they already have good internet access. You might try it in some other urban area that has lots of young people around. As far as building/selling computers you have some pretty stiff compatition around. You would need to research it and see what you come up with.

There's a place 5 mins from here like that (no selling of hardware though, just gaming). I've beein in there once and it was mostly high school aged kids playing counter-strike. Needless to say, I'd rather not go back, ever. But they are still here and business seems good, probably because they don't do many hardware intensive games. It's also next door to several very popular fast food places like Starbucks, ice cream shop, etc. Location is a very important thing.
