Built new system, XP won't boot now

I just built a new system, but kept my old HDD so I wouldn't have to reinstall windows xp. But now it gives a BSOD on boot! Any way to fix this?
 
reformat and reinstall
that'd be the clean stable way to do it
200 and xp won't start after a mobo switch
the less likely to be successful and stable alternative:
boot from the install cd and try the repair option
i really advise a fresh format and install
