Built New PC: Keeps Rebooting

Just built a new PC with Intel P4, 3.0ghz on a ECS PT800CE-A motherboard. The PC seems to reboot everytime when I am using DVDShrink to read a DVD.

I've switched out the memory as well as tried a new video card, but the problem persists. The computer is running on a 420watt power supply, the original one that came with the case. I've tried switching to a 350watt power supply, but still getting the problem.

There are no other extra cards in the PC.

The only thing I can figure out is the problem is either the CPU, motherboard or the case.

When the machine reboots, I don't get any error message or popup error windows. The computer simply reboots and appears just like the machine was just turned on. You'll see the video bios message and then the normal bootup sequence.

Bad cpu? Bad motherboard? Bad case? Under powered power supply?

Tried running in safe mode and was able to read a DVD properly without a reboot happening. Afterwards I installed the video driver, which I forgot to install initally. But the problem still persists.

Any ideas?

Thanks for any help.

Tell the machine to not restart when an error occurs.

Go into the system properties and on the advanced tab, go to Startup and Recovery. Click settings then uncheck the button that says Automatically Restart. You'll get a Blue Screen of Death instead of a restart. That way you'll get an error message you can troubleshoot.

I'll be sure to turn that option on and try it.

Anybody else got any ideas if it doesn't give me an error message?

My contribution: use a high-quality power supply. There's a lot of cheap junkers that get bundled with cases. Fortron, Antec, Enermax and PC Power & Cooling are brands that earned good-to-great reputations around here, if you need some suggestions.
