Built my own speaker stands

I was sick and had to be at home the week after Christmas. After driving myself up a wall, I decided to put my indoors time to good use and make the speaker stands I had been wanting for a while. I couldn't buy them online since only horribly expensive ones had upper platforms big enough for my speakers.

I used 1" thick red oak for the wood and 3" schedule 40 PVC for the piping. There is 3/8" threaded rod which is really holding everything together in the middle. I've yet to fill the PVC up with sand or other things because I want to find something like a bag to keep the sand in since the PVC isn't perfectly level with the wood.

Overall I think they turned out pretty good for my first real project. I had a lot of fun building them and even got some new tools in the process! At least I learned about building stuff if anything. They're not perfectly level but they'll do the trick just fine. Now I just need to get some spikes to put on the bottom and I'll be set!

Have you guys built anything similar for your own usage? I remember the guy who was building his own poker table and it was AWESOME! Please post pics of your own home projects.

forgot to give credit for the general plans :

TNT Stubby speaker stands
Those were the most decent and (for my lack of skill) doable plans I could find.

wow OP that is awesome! I've wanted speaker stands for the longest time but have never been able to jusitfy the cost, your design is teh cool and will probably cost me 1/5th of what a store-bought set would.

Very nice agnitrate

If you don't mind a suggestion, before you fill the PVC pipe w/ sand or another type of filler, run the speaker wire through it first w/ rubber grommets for a cleaner appearance 🙂

I thought about that after I had already made the design 🙁 There is nowhere for the cable to get down into the PVC unless I cut a small hole into the PVC. I'll probably do that when I get back home, but since I'm at school now I don't have any tools to do anything. I should have thought further ahead when making them but I guess hindsight is always 20/20 😛

All of my stereo gear (amps, preamp, phono stage, DAC) is DIY

Cool. Those look like store bought!

Did you make yours in a similar fashion with threaded rod and what not? Those look very cool and you have a nice setup!

I built the carport in our backyard.. maybe I'll get pics of it one day, looks very nice. Dad planned it, I put it together 😛

lol, I thought that was michael j fox in the front.

have you ever tried spreading out your fronts a bit, like put the rack next to the tv and the speakers farther apart?
