Built in garage door opener in Nissan... how to program?

Homerboy

We have a '97 Maxima GLE that has a built in 3 button garage door opener in the driver's visor. Car was bought used a few years ago and I've never tinkered with it, but how do I "program" this built in to work with my garage door opener?

i know on my grandparents odyssey you have to hold it down as well as an opener near it? Or something like that.

I think pretty much all the Homelink systems work the same. I know the one on my 2001 Maxima works the same as on my mom's 2005 Subaru Legacy.

Normally you have to hold down the two outer buttons to reset the system (the LED starts blinking rapidly when it's ready), then take your garage door remote and hold it near the Homelink transmitter. Simultaneously press and hold both the remote and the desired Homelink button until the LED starts blinking very rapidly. That's it in most cases. Some openers, though, have a "roving" code, and, on these, you have to press a "Learn" button on the opener itself, then, within 30 seconds, press the desired Homelink button. All this is done AFTER doing the first steps I described above.

Might need to buy a remote at home depot or such and make sure it's compatible with your opener.

Unfortunately it might not be cheap. I'd just write down your opener's model number and Google it. Hopefully you can find one that isn't too heinously expensive. I don't think the Homelink system has any ability to work without being "trained" by a compatible remote.
