built a new system, wont boot

I had it boot before, but got an error since i didnt have a power cable for my PCI X800 card.

now I finally got the cable in the mail, and went to boot, and power came on for a split second, then cut out. now i hit the power button, and get zero activity. when i turn the PS off, it make a wierd high-pitched bird chirping sound.... what happened?

only thing different is that I plugged in my DVD RW in and attached said power cable.

I've had newly built systems act flakey. Try the clearing-reset bios pin on the mb. Thats what worked for me.

Also if you built from scratch, check all wire to connector plugs (usb, fans, power, etc).

Is anything in contact with the back of the system board? (maybe a screw or something else?) That can cause such behavior.

i unplugged everything and checked connections. i noticed that the 20 pin connector and a few of the transistors(?) or cylinder things nearby were very hot. I could almost smell something burning. this was only near the 20 pin connnector, i checked other places on the board. no fans came on, no video, nothing. and when i turn power off on the PS, still makes that wierd noise. i cant tell if its a bad board or PS..

ill try the reset funcion as well, but this thing has never fully booted, and i think the heat probably indicates aproblem.. no? hooked up another PS and it started to spin the fan for a split sec, then cut out. then would not come on again.. strange.

burning?! did you make sure to set the cpu properly? hmm...

If it were me I would probably just throw it out the window...

If you have an old video card lying around switch back to it and see what happens. Or just plug in the basics, nothing on the PCI slots or any other devices aside from the neccesities i.e. (hard drive, floppy, ram, video card) Resetting the cmos on the motherboard is a good idea. HOpe you get it working

I did almost throw it out the window after a few hours last night. I stripped it down to the basics. Processor is in correctly. Wasnt hot in that area. Just the 20pin connector..

if something were installed correctly, wouldnt I at least get something on the monitor, like an error message?

It would be helpful if we didn't have to guess what your hardware is. Post the specs, please. And start by checking whether your ATX12V cable is plugged in.

If it wasn't plugged in, you may have damaged your motherboard by making it try to pull all its 12V through the single 12V wire in the 20-pin cable. For goodness sakes, don't try running stuff without the auxiliary power cables plugged in, either mobo or video card 😉

One other note: since the Antec power supply has Fan-Only plugs, be aware they're only for use with 12-volt case fans, and for no other purpose.

Sorry for not giving it out - I put it in my sig as well:

Gigabyte 915P Duo Pro LGA 775 Mobo
P4 3.0 HT 800MHz FSB
1 Gig Corsair DDR2 Dual Ch. PC 4200
ATI X800XT PCI Express
Dual 36G Raptors @ RAID 0
Antec 430W TruePower PS
Lian Li 6077 Case

I had all the connections made. 12V 4-pin connector was plugged in. Thanks

Hi Brav,

I'm thinking along the lines of Stormshadow and Com8017877.

I'd pull the mobo outta the case (I never put one in till it has booted and gone through the POST), set in on a phonebook or such, leave only cpu (HS+F), ram and vid card. The hook up the PSU, mouse, KB and monitor and see if it will POST. IF all goes well, start adding other components.

What is Stormshadow and Co8017877??

I pretty much tried that but had it in the case. I'll take everything apart again and try step by step. Can you think of any reason why the board would get hot near the 20 pin?

Your motherboard is designed for a 24-pin main ATX cable. It might be a good idea to get a PSU that's equipped with the full 24-pin plug, since it sounds like it needs them in your case.

Posters/members who posted remarks above/b4 me.

But if mechBgon is right (he usually is too), I'd say that's your prob. Funny, but I'd have thought you w/h noticed that (20 pin v 24 pin)

Yea, I definately did, but it had a cover over the last 4 pins, and didnt say anything in the manual. Thanks everyone for the help.
