Built a new PC; DVD+-RW and CD-RW don't work

I tried to burn a CD with the CD-RW drive, and got some kind of EIDE error as it went to burn. Tried another disc, same problem. Tried to burn a CD in the DVD+-RW drive, same problem. Same error every time. I saved the error log somewhere but now I can't find it, and I don't want to waste another CD to get it again. The error mentions EIDE, so I think I did something in the cabling wrong.

Any ideas? Do you need the exact error to determine?

If you could give a full rundown of all your system's hardware, as well as the software that you use, that might help us have more insight. :) Here are some likely things to start with...
  • The ATA/IDE controllers might be using PIO mode instead of an UltraDMA mode
  • Your burning software might need updating (Nero, Roxio, whatever)
  • Maybe your motherboard's chipset drivers need to be reinstalled, or just installed period :)

Shuttle "AN35N-Ultra" nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset Motherboard

NEC 8X Black DVD+RW/-RW Drive, Model ND-2500A

Lite-On Black 52X32X52 CD-RW Drive, Model LTR-52327S

When I installed the motherboard, I checked to see if the BIOS needed updated, which it did not. I looked to see if there was a firmware upgrade for the CD burner when it didn't work, and there is one, but it's hard to find and people unanimously agree that it causes problems. I am using Nero 6.

EDIT: And not sure if you need it, but: (1) stick of 512 MB Kingston RAM, GeForce 5600 FX Ultra videocard, and a Microsoft MN-730 Wireless PCI Adapter.

Did you choose to install the nVidia SW IDE drivers during the chipset driver installation process?

That's probably the issue here. Use the MS built-in IDE drivers if at all possible; it seems that nearly universally, there are issues when using mfg/chipset-specific IDE drivers, and CD-burners on those IDE channels. I had the same sorts of issues when (foolishly) installed the Via IDE drivers from the 4-in-1 4.45 package when I set up my then-new MSI KT4V-L system. BIG problems burning CDs, heck, even reading CDs. All the hardware was configured correctly, it was just the drivers.

I've never seen anyone mention that you should use generic drivers instead of those supplied by the manufacturer. I've also never seen a situation where this solved the issue. If your problem was solved by doing so, then it seems likely to me that your hardware is damaged.

My suggestions:
1. Replace the IDE cable. Try to find an 80-conductor cable, and place the master at the end and the slave in the middle. Both of those will improve signal quality.
2. Try a different media brand (I like TDK) or try burning at a lower speed.
3. Use different burning software. Try something like DeepBurner or CDBurnerXP Pro (both freeware).
4. Update the firmware on your drives.
5. Don't overclock.

Also, it would be helpful if you told us precisely what the error message says.
