That thing is a mess.

Depends.

If I am just building a home for me to live in, then I only would need ~2500 sq ft at most.

If I am building a home that has space for all my "toys" and such, then ~4000 sq ft (not including basement space which is where my home theater and game room would be).

I've already got a plan in my head if I can ever afford it. And it would be a sqaure house that is 60 ft x 60 ft. So 3600 sqft per floor and two floors so like 7000 sqft. I think I would consider an additional room off to hte side that has maybe 16 ft ceilings that is another 1000 sqft though. And if I could do it, there would be an indoor basketball court in addition to all of this.

But more importantly, I'd like 10 acres or so so I can set up a BMX track and have a backyard basketball/roller hockey court/rink. I'd take that over a big house.

Point of all this, if I had the money, I'd probably go as big as possible. And i would not care about how ornate the place is.

Depends on the size of my family. I'd spend a shitload of money on the land first and foremost. I'd want someplace where I could do something (fish, hunt, etc) not just build a house and have to go elsewhere for fun. Building a 500-750m rifle/shotgun range in the backyard would be awesome.

Personally if I could buy a place of my choosing, it would either be on the coast, on the water so that I could build a dock with a couple of slips, rent a couple of them out. Maybe build an aircraft hanger with a ramp leading to the water for an amphib and a helipad for a little Robinson 22 with a taxiway leading out to a strip for a cessna/cirrus. All I know is that I'd have toys. Lots of them.

I need to go back to one of the many threads I already answered on this subject, but basically mine would be a large square, with a nice little courtyard in the middle. Each leg of the square would have the requisite bedrooms and such.
Also the front entryway would be big enough that several people could stand in it and take off their hats & gloves and such, and put them on the ample pegs.

YES on the courtyard! I don't know as much about layout of rooms, but I do know it would have a courtyard, and I'd try to set it up like one of those japanese style gardens, with a pond. Line the backyard with some trees, then set up a vegetable garden out back. Hmm, maybe I could also use one of those fancy soil lined roofs to fit another garden on top of the house. Out front could have a flower bed, as well as some trees here and there. Maybe some fruit trees if they'll work in the climate.

All I really know about the interior is I'd want a nice kitchen, a furnished basement, and a weight room / workout room. Probably some heavy duty insulation too, too make up for the courtyard layout.

There are a lot of people on here who give a very self righteous "no one needs more than 2,500 square foot blah blah" attitude.

I've personally been in a few large houses (10,000 square feet) and while they are large in size, I still found them to be quite comfortable.

If you had $100m, how large of a house would you build?

I could easily image building or buying at least a 20,000 square foot house. It's about how to design it that makes it easy to live in.

Would you fill it with expensive jeans?

Do you really have a brand logo as your avatar?

Ok, we're not talking about a summer house and I'm sure you get a lot of enjoyment out of letting everyone know you know someone who has a house like that.

Hah, I guess its the same enjoyment you get out of telling everyone you wear $200 womens jeans.

As a single person, I'd want a large wooded lot, completely fenced in. House in the middle would be ~1000 sq.ft. and an equally as large detached garage. A well, septic system, and solar power. Throw in a few windmills. Mountain view.

I wouldn't want a very large house. I'd only have to fill it up with stuff I don't need or want, and end up with heating and A/C bills I'd not be happy with. Probably something in the 2,000-3,000 square foot range would be fine.

Me and my brother, so 2 Masters, 2 Office areas, 2 Living Room, 2 spare bedrooms, 1 kitchen, 1 dining room, library / reading (but that could fit in with my office if it is big enough), rec room for pool table, workshop, very big garage (4 cars min and it could be seperate bldg), 2 full and 1 half bath / laundry area. So we would be looking around 6,00 sq ft or so.
As a point of reference, a typical 3 BR, 2 Car Garage, BiLevel, with Eat In Kitchen, Dining, Living Room, Spare Room, Den 2 1/2 baths comes in at around 2,000 sq ft (no basement, full attic)

The largest house in Las Vegas is like that, a large square with a courtyard in the middle.

http://homesoftherichest.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/spanishgate.jpg

The square is 38k square feet and there is an entertainment building and 6 guest houses and another detached garage, totaling over 100k square feet.

Ohhhh hell no!
I was thinking between 10 thousand and 15 thousand, max. No guest houses, one of the sections would be guest bedrooms thats all.
And there would be a big separate garage or perhaps the back section would be a workshop and garage. Right leg guest bedrooms and master bedrooms. Front leg would have the entryway and living room, den/study. Left leg kitchen, laundry room, pantry near the back by the workshop. I dunno where the mini theater would be.
Also house would have central vacuum, central audio, security system hooked into the computer in my bedroom. Offsite CCTV.
Oh, and small workout room, with treadmill, elliptical and bow flex or something similar.

Several thousand acres of land.
Large attached garage with room for at least 10 cars.
seperate building with a workshop for woodworking as well as storage for for my toys (snowmobiles, atvs, jetskis, boat) heated to 50ish degrees
House itself would have a decent master bedroom with 2 walk in closets and a nice master bath.

Basement would have a dedicated theater room which would be about 35 feet long by 20 feet wide with an 18 foot high ceiling. It would be completely light controlled, and I would spring for 2 or 3 8inch CRT projectors and run them together for the increase in contrast and brightness. I'd probably go with a screen size of about 150-160 inches.

Otherwise, I'd have 1 dedicated office no more than 150-200 square feet, dedicated home library, 150-200 square feet, media room next to theater with bluray library, another 150-200 square feet, bar area with pool table raised and behind theater area, with part of the bar facing the screen ... for overflow for theater, as well as to eat some grub while watching a movie...

would have 2 bathrooms near the theater/bar area.

would have a nice sized kitchen with breakfast nook, probably 250 square feet.
A nice sized dedicated dining room, maybe 200 more square feet.

Then I'd have a wing of bedrooms for friends/family or eventually kids ... probably 8 bedrooms each with their own bathroom...

I'd also have a second building, with a 2 car garage attached to a moderate 3 bedroom house. That would be for the housekeeper and their family.

Main house square footage would be around 5000 or so sq feet... give or take (around 1500 sq feet in basement for theater, bar, media room, pool table, basement bathrooms, and server room.)
Around 1500 sq feet for 1st floor above basement, with master suite, kitchen, office, den, dining room, library)
And about 2000 sq feet for the wing with the 8 additional bedrooms.... (each with private bath and walk in closet.)

Then about 1200-1500 sq foot for housekeeper quarters.

The house would probably cost 1-2 million to build, but, the thousands of acres would eat up the rest of the $$$ in no time ...

I own a 2200 sq ft home now. My only requirements are a bigger garage, slightly larger bedrooms and closets, a little more land, a view would be nice, and a larger kitchen/family room. I'd be fine with 2800-3000 sq ft.

As large as I can get it while not having to pay anything for it in the future. 😛

20,000sqft wouldn't be enough. I'm thinking large ballrooms, huge windows that go up 3 floors, many nice and large kitchens, large storage rooms, very lavish entrances, large yards, a large basketball court, and more.

🙂

Oh, and it'd be at least 6 stories.
