I am building a system, what do you guys recommend?? Athlon or TBird, Voodoo5 or GeForce 2 GTS?? And how much ram is adequate so I wont have to upgrade for a while. I am a gamer, I play lots of UT right now but that might change. Thanks

If I was building a new system right now I'd probably build a 1 GHz+ TBird with a GF2 GTS. The Ultra isn't worth the money right now, as NV20 will be out before too long.

If you ask me, the GTS isn't worth the money. You only get 15+ FPS on average over a DDR. With the GF2 Ultra, the framerates are way above that.

But overall, neither one of them are worth the money. I just think that the GF2 coulda been a little faster for the money.

Note I didn't say "Go buy a retail GTS. It's a kickass deal."

I'm quite happy with my $188 (Now $174) GTS from FS/FT. It's running quite contently at 225/400, & frankly it kicks ass.

Raptor,

What amount of money are you looking to spend? That makes a huge difference on what you decide to purchase.

I think you should go for a 1GHz TBird with a GeForce 2 GTS and 256 or 384MB PC100/PC133 SDRAM.

Build off that... ;)

Do you mean just the ram, or the rest of the system?
What are you looking to spend?

Here's what you should look for in a decent gaming system:

CPU: Athlon(Thunderbird) or Duron 700MHz and above is more than adequate. Your vid card will become the limiting factor in games way before the processor, plus the 700s overclock pretty well to the 900MHz area.

Memory: 128MB minimum. If you don't want to upgrade for a while then 256MB.

Video Card: Any GeForce 2 GTS, as people have mentioned the Ultra is a bit overpriced, but if you can afford it then g/a.

The rest will depend on your budget.

I have seen in general hardware many people say studies and benchmakrs show that most people don't even use all 128mb Ram. If you are running 98se and not graphic heave 128 will be good. But if you are in win2k and like graphic programs you might want to consider 256 even though 128 would probably still get the job done.

UT uses lot of ram. get 128 mb at minimum and get 256mb for best as they are getting cheaper.

Did I forget to mention I am a newbie??? Are Athlon and TBird the same thing????? I'm not much of a computer geek(can you tell). I got a geforce right now, and I hate the prechacing crap, but if you guys say GForce 2 is better than Voodoo5 cool.
