It's a little confusing, because it looks like Conroe will use LGA775 but has to have a different version of the chipsets -- new version of 965, 975X, etc. A guy on this forum provides your answer:

A new i965 Intel chipset is in production as well as a modified version of the existing i975x chipset. Neither has been released for sale yet. There is also supposed to be a i985 chipset to support the 1333MHz FSB of the 3.3GHz Xtreme Edition.

Additionally the Core 2 Duo with a Merom core will be a modified socket 479, same as the Yonah core.

Short answer, no, I don't think you can buy a motherboard today that will support core 2 but I could be wrong.

BTW that forum thread came up as the first Google result for "conroe socket." Nice little site, Google. :)

Durn... Are you sure that there are no current motherboards that support Conroe? If not, when can we expect them, I want to start building ASAP!

Intel hasn't released all the specs for conroe yet. Many boards may work with it, but without the specs, the manufacturers can't even update the bios. Wait for July 24th to start your build, just to be safe. No point in buying a board that doesn't work with conroe.

I believe a specific revision (304 or something) of the Intel D975XBX board supports Conroe, although there is frequently no way to tell what revision you're getting if you buy online.
