Building PC for friends/family - which Win OS?

I'm setting up a PC for my mom, and one for my girlfriend. Most people would suggest to install WinXP because it's more stable, but are there any other reason's to install or not install XP, 98SE, or ME (I own all 3)?

I figured the admin/user security in XP would be nice w/ the GF's kids to keep them from screwing w/ system files, etc. But didn't know if XP overall would be too confusing for them. This is a 1.4 Tbird.

The one for my mom will be my old 450Mhz, so didn't know if it might be a little slow w/ XP. Also it's got an MX300 soundcard and Voodoo3 video, which it seems I've heard don't work well in XP.

Yeah this may be a corny post, but I'm mainly looking for suggestions as I'm sure others have thought about the same thing.

Thanks

I think that XP is an excelent OS for somewhat begginers. I just built a really nice pc for my grandma (GeForce 3 Ti 200, 1700+ Athlon XP, and MSI K7T266 Pro 2 RU) and installed WinXP Pro on it. She figured it out really quickly. In my opinion, it is a whole lot easier for a begginer. If they've used another version of windows and are confused with the interface, then you could always configure it to look just like win9x.
The one for your mom is definitely too slow. I would use win 98 instead of ME though. You will get a lot more performance and stability out of it that way.
