Building New System

Hi, I am building a new system and this will be my first time at overclocking. I do no gaming. I do a lot of multi-tasking like encoding, listening to music, surfing, and just starting to play around with Photoshop. I also like to watch movies on my 22" Acer widescreen and Klipsch 4.1 speakers. I have narrowed my build down to the following with some help from people in the hardware forum. Now that I would like to OC, I am wondering if I will be able to get around 3.0Ghz or more with this system? Remember, this is my first time at this and I'm not sure if OCing depends on what video card you have. I saw a how-to article around here some time ago on OCing but I am no longer able to locate it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I want to stay around this price range if not even lower.

Gigabyte 965P-DS3
C2D E6400
Corsair XMS2 2GB PC2 6400 - (this just went up $70 last night)
Gigabyte Radeon X1650PRO
AC Freezer 7 Pro
SeaSonic M12 SS-500HM I like the modular cabling.

I would like to get at least 3.0Ghz out of this so plesae give me your suggestions and/or opinions. Also, if you know the link to the OCing guide I would appreciate that. I'm looking at putting in my Newegg order today.

Thanks,

CEV

Start off with the e4300, you will save a bunch of $$ there and will require less of a FSB boost to get to 3ghz

The AC 7 Pro is nice but way overpriced at $50, the stock Intel unit is good till 3ghz

Here it is for $21

Freezer 7 Pro

Here is the same cooler from Chiefvalue which is Newegg by another name

7 PRO $24

CEV, I have DS3 & E6400. 3.0GHz is not a big deal for that stuff. Most likely 3.2GHz stable with the stock cooler with Vcore around 1.4v, FSB +0.2v and MCH +0.1v. Also, you can get any DDR2-800 RAM, CL5. With DDR2-800 CL4, the difference in performance is within 1%. So don't waste your money on expensive RAM and cooler

Well, I've decided to go with the E4300 for better OCing ability especially since I am new to it. For Ram I am now looking at this. I should fare well with this setup, correct? I would like to even try getting above 3.0Ghz, but want it to be stable since my pc is on almost 24/7. Will this do the trick? And I still have not found that OCing guide. Plesae provide me a link if you know where it is.

Thanks,

CEV

Shoot this would be fine for your intended speeds.

There is way cheaper ram that will get you to 3ghz, thats the beauty of the E4300

$170 Free S/H, No rebates

I am using this mem with an E4300 and an S3 board which is not as good of an Oc'er as the DS3 is and I have been runnning stable at 3ghz

What you very likely will need is a Northbridge cooler, mine is red hot, I picked up this and should have it next week

HR-05

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going with that $170 Corsair ram, but the HR-05 is out of stock. I'll keep on eye on it for when it's back in stock.

Thanks,
